SCHAAKATTACK
What are the possibilities of a 20hp Johnson tiller jumping out of gear under load. Easy or hard fix. Any guesstimate$ Thanks!!
dkf
Look at the linkage to make shure no shift rods are bent. I always take my small outboards off for the winter and store them in the warm basement. I bent a reverse locking rod on mine one motor and didn't notice it right away, must have bumped it while moving it around. Start with the simple stuff first. boatfixer
1st of all, what year? Here are a couple of things.Shift linkage out of adjustmentworn clutch dog and/or fwd gear lugsdetent on shift lever wore outI also ran into one that the thrust washer in front of the prop was wore out allowing the prop shaft to float back and forth and every time the guy was in rough water, it would jump out of gear-rare however. IFallsRon
I'll second the the worn dogs/lugs. I made this repair on a 1985 35 Johnson I bought several years ago. It would jump out of reverse. I think it was around $350 for my repair.
