Typically its not "the whole unit" but one of several parts that has failed or leaked. Typically compressors are super common on these with condensers a close second. Most shops will offer A/C performance checks starting at around $39 (sometimes more sometimes less) plus freon if needed.

Yes, what Airjer said. The repair shop will have to get the system charged and some what working to diag. what the concern is. Some times it could be $100 or it could be a $1000.00. Depends on what has failed.
