It's the pits...

Recommended Posts

I just looked at the weatherbug and things do not look good for my plans concerning next week. I have the blessing of having open water to fish almost all year, since I do not live far from the Mississippi River and the dam at Red Wing. Usually a guy can get in there and do some damage to his plastics arsenal and even bring home some dinner. With hi's forcast to be on the minus side of 0 for much of the week ahead, I don't think I'll make it. Anyone else "do the dam" at wintertime? For me it has been several years worth of defiance to the cold that drives the less durable to the ice shacks. I'd rather be as cold in a boat and having the benefit of all that water to fish than to be looking down a hole and wondering what lies ten feet away on the other side of a hump. The only thing that can really keep us with "truely winterized Minnesota boats" from venturing out is the deep cold which appears now at our doorsteps. And that, my friends, is the pits!

Sure life happens- why wait....The Crapster....good fishing guys!

I know what you mean. I don't have the opportunity to "do the dam" as you do, but when I get tired of drilling through 2ft of ice with my hand auger later in the season, I head down and fish some warn water discharges on the river. Crappies, bass, and carp mainly, but its quite a relief to cast once in a while!

    • That's one of the main reason I run a Vexilar. I don't want to be the jerk that interferes with everyone else......
    • Was in Grand Marais for 6 days. Didn’t see one single grouse! Of course, it rained and snowed every day. So it was less than ideal conditions.
    • I've been shooting federal premium trophy copper in my .270 for the past few years.   I switched after the blue box federals didn't pass through a 3.5 year old buck at about 60 yards or so. I found the round just under the hide on the far side and only recovered the buck because I smelled him while doing a grid search. I've shot several deer with them and I have no complaints.  An added bonus is they shoot just like the blue box ones do in my rifle.
    • Britt: Do you know where to view the Ruffed Grouse Society Invitational Hunt in Grand Rapids MN annual harvest statistics by year? Thanks.
    • Watch their interference disappear when you shut your marcum off 🤨
    • Rick was going to start that topic right after this one slowed down! 😅
    • Don't be fooled by stainless cables. Take proper care of them and change them every few years.Do your pivots every couple years too.
    • Might as well get augers in on this too!
    • Just counted 14 of them under and on my feeder. Cardinals, Nuthatches, Juncos, and asst sparrows came in and they chased them all away. It's like one stands guard and chase everything off. Sorry guys, time has come to start thinning the blue rats out!
