favorite beer/food combo?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, just cracking (well, pouring) the fist beer of the weekend, and wondering if you have any favorite beers to pair with your great meals. Just got done brewing a maple brown ale and man does it go well with a venison steak smothered in sauteed morels... summer beer and grilling season is here, lets hear your favorites!

Tough to beat a Killian's Irish Red or Modelo Negro and.... anything on the ol' BBQ.

Free beer with free food! grin

Actually, I like an icy-cold light beer with freshly caught, beer-battered fish. I like a big mug of stout at Granite City with just about anything on their menu. And my favorite would be an Alaskan Smoked Porter with a wild game feed or a well stocked cheese tray.

It's hard to pass up a beer and a beer boiled brat. Or beer can chicken. Or for that matter, just firing up the grill with a beer in hand.

German brats with a Warsteiner to wash it down... had it in Germany.

How ever I have tasted an awesome Polish beer, but I can't remember the name of it.

A cool, refreshing Schlitz goes with everything especially deep fried cheese curds and a brat just out of the beer hot tub. Woah, did I grow up in Milwaukee?

I just found out tonight that a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat (or two) goes very well with a cinnamon-chipotle dry drubbed moose tenderloin slow-cooked on the charcoal Weber (with a little Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce on the side for dipping). MMMMMMM...

A Leines Honey Weiss and Elk Burger Sliders, with thousand island dressing, on the grill.

(Had some Elk burger in the freezer and decided to make little burgers on little buns a couple of weeks ago and WOW!)

Schlitz....You just made my stomach turn. I had my first Schlitz sinece the 80's a couple weeks ago and thought the first sip was pretty good. After that it got really tough! I think the remarketing effort will be short lived.

Away from the home grill I like a dozen BWW grilled (yes they will grill your wings if you ask) Asian Zing wings with 2 sides of Bleu Cheese and some celery. Top it off with a tall Mich Golden Light.

You complain about Schlitz and then come back with a Mich Golden Light!

There is a reason why Mich Golden Light is the second most popular beer in MN. (I am just not sure why) It does go very well with wings...

I didn't know that about Mich Golden light and I don't like any light beer but I do like your idea of wings and cold beer.

How does one know this? Or where does one learn of such things? I would like to see the list. Beer and wings is good and so is beer and fried fish.

    • Hello from the NW Angle!

Water temperatures are starting in the low 70’s in the morning, reaching mid to upper 70’s in the evening.

Minnesota walleye action can be hot running deep diving crank-baits straight, down rigging or lead core. Soft bottom areas can also be worked with spinners and a night crawler.  Fish have been favoring gold on bright days and orange, chartreus or pink in low light.  Many larger northern pike this last week in the boat via crank-baits just outside of rock reefs and points.

Canadian walleye fishing has been more productive away from reefs and points in soft bottomed areas. The best method is to pull a spinner to find concentrations along the bottom and switch to jigging to fill out limits.

Musky attitude in Canada varies day to day. Plenty of fish are still being caught in shallow weeds including a couple of 50+ giants this past week.  Fish are also being caught in more traditional mid-summer spots such as rock reefs and points.  The most productive baits this week were crane baits or other flat baits, buck tails and top waters.

      Until next week,
      Sunset Lodge

    • we do a package similar to big dave's shrimp boil but with walleye layer of sliced new taters on the bottom, then the walleye filet, add carrots, bell pepper and sweet onion from the garden, w/butter pat and old bay i seal the packet and poke once with a fork to let some of the steam escape. on the grill at 350 for 40 minutes
    • 5 qts pickled green beans, 2-2gal jars cukes.
    • Port Washington has been hot but mostly cohos.  A lot can change in a couple weeks.  Will wait and keep our options open as long as we can.
    • Do you boil the eggs before smoking them?
    • that's my thoughts to Bobber...
    • Good question Mike,  although eggs take on a lot of smoke fairly quick it might be worth trying it both ways. Whatta got too lose, eggs are cheap!!  🤓
