Wheelhouse size

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased an older wheelhouse that I am remodeling. The problem is the width of the trailer is 111". According to Mn statute the widest the overall width can be is 102". Anybody have any experience or knowledge of my options?

I believe the 102" must be from outside the wheels.

Your trailer 111" or over all from outside the wheels ?.

If you are going to be pulling it all over I don't see anyway around a major frame/wheel modification.

Will need to bring the wheels in to the correct width with a wheel well cut out from the outside, or a inner wheel well.

You talking retractable, or just wheeled ?

Maybe a "permit" is a option if available for such cause.

It is retractable wheels on the outside of the fish house. 111" from outside of wheel to outside of wheel. Are there any permits issued for this or could I put the "red triangle thingies" on that farm equipment uses?

There are lots of houses running around that are wider than the 102". A cop would have to be having a bad day or you would have to do something else for one of them to pull you over. Mine is a hair to wide. I don't pull it at night and I use the shoulder as much as possible. I don't pull it very far. Am I in the wrong. Yes, but I guess I will chance it.

Red Triangle markers are for slow moving only. I don't think the state would give you a permit either. I have helped in moving houses and those permits are not cheap and the are usually a one time/date specific for the move. Short of just pulling it and hope for the best you will have to remodel the wheels. But if you are ever involved in an accident or cause one you will be held responsible even if you are not at fault with a trailer that is illegal.

You can see about an annual "Oversize Permit". You would apply for one through State for state roads. This will not cover you for county roads though which have their own permits. There are annual permits also.

Not saying that this is right, but a friend of mine also has a wheelhouse about that size and has not bothered with a permit. He has pulled it all over the state for the last 15 years and has not had an issue.

Good Luck.

The problem with the over width trailers beginning this year is the licensing. All fish houses now need to be licensed by the MN DPS. If the trailer is oversized you will not be able to register it with the DPS. From what I understand is the licensing will be inforced beginning next ice fishing season to give people time to get them registered.

One thing you want to remember is that you could be liable if there was an accident and they found out your house was not road legal. I don't know if you car insurance would cover it(being it was not road legal) I would be more afraid of the sue happies/money hungry attorneys if there was an accident than the police. Good luck with what ever you decide!
