I use an air assisted gun in my shop. its an $1,800 unit, I spray laquer. Most if the finishers at jobsites use an airless gun. They have a 5 gal pale of finish that get pumped to the gun. all electric no need for an air compressor. I think these units are $700-$900 at home centers.

I own a body shop and we have been using these for about ten years. You will need a respirator for sure and as far as a home owner goes if you already have an air compressor that is a two stage then go to a salvage outlet and by a cheapo hvlp and do your stuff. You will pay around 50 bucks for a chinese gun that will work well when new and as long as you keep it totally clean. I don't think you need to buy a professional gun as they are around 400.00 for an entry level model. If you have a single stage compressor then I recomend an old style lvhp gun. It will do what you need it to do. I have one at home that I paid 19.95 for at a local salvage outlet and I spray stain, poly, varnish and even put some primer on my dumptruck with it (never did get around to painting that thing). I don't see a huge difference in the amount of overspray in the air. you will want to put an exhaust fan in the window to move the vapors out. Much more efficient than just opening a door.
