i just need one little thing -- how to put the bait on, something like that. as detailed as possible. i will be so grateful!

thanks so much. you can reply here or to [email protected]

How about "How to tie a jig". I use this because it makes fishing life easier when the g/f knows how to tie her own hooks. smile.gif

  • Pull the line through the eyelit of the hook
  • Overlap the line from the eyelit with the line going to the eyelit
  • Pinch a small "loop" in the two lines with your index finger and thumb at the eyelit of the jig.
  • Twist the two pieces of line 7 times.
  • Pull the end of the line through the first loop you made and pull the two pieces until tight.
  • Trim the excessive "leftover" line away.

Kripes!! This sounds technical...OK.

Baiting a hook with a minnow:

  • Take minnow out of the bucket.
  • Push the hook up through the bottom of the head through the top.
  • Fish!

How's that??? Probably not of the greatest help, but I tried.

Good luck with your paper. smile.gif

So what you are saying is that its ok for you to be making thinly disguised sexual comments to college age females who post here? And your wife is ok with that too? Go ahead your the field staffer.

OMG close your eyes and plug your ears. It was a harmless joke. I never was stranded with the Swedish Bikini Team.
There wasnt any sexual comment or harrassment to the the poster.
I didnt degrade, insult of flame anyone.
The poster is an adult about the same age as the 200,000 US soliders in Iraq.

"About baiting a hook, watch what you are doing or someone could get poked." No double meaning there wink wink, nudge nudge! Fine. But I believe the poster asked for help with a story. We could just wait and see what she thinks. She tells me to shut-up and mind my own business thats what I'll do.

College students learn a lot outside of the classroom on subjects other than what is on the curriculum. As far as the paper goes, I can't think of something creative you can learn, but how about coming up with a creative solution to a problem that arises. What if you dropped your keys in the water and you need to get them out or if you had to find some way to get the truck unstuck without a shovel.

you guys are so great! thanks for the help.

unitedjigsticker, you gave me exactly what i wanted, but i'm wondering if you could maybe be a tiny bit more specific about stuff. i really don't know anything about fishing but i want it to sound realistic! for example what does the line feel like, what does the other stuff feel like and how big is it and stuff. (if you don't have time for this, any helpful ideas for websites to check out would be great). thanks so much!

and stop with the sexual harassment, you guys. wink.gif just kidding.

hope the weather's treating you well out there! it could be warmer on the east coast but after all the snow i'm not complaining.

The weathers been to nice, above average temps and you got all our snow.

I think your couple is fishing for crappies. Must be in an out of the way back bay that no one goes to very often. The fishing line is 2 lb test and felt like his girl friends hair between his fingers. There using a small glow 1/32 oz red jig tipped with a crappie minnow hooked in the dorsal fin.
Being stranded with nothing to do I hope they dont run out of minnows.

To stay warm they huddle in a sleeping bag, with their jeans on of coarse.

Ask away if you have any more questions.

Can we see the story when your done?

OK icestorygirl isn't uptight and I am. That's the way I was raised and I can't help it I'm 40 years behind the times. I forget that people don't get upset over things that used to be considered unacceptable. I'll just change my name to churchlady..... Good luck with the story. I hope you get an A (that would be a letter grade and has no other meaning in my post). I wish I could help with a suggestion for the story; but I'm blanking... I know. How about having an irate father on the cell phone wanting his daughter to get home from the lake, now. That's a moral majority kind of suggestion; but realistic too (at least I hope). Take care!

...more details on baiting a hook...

"she timidly held the squirming minnow between her thumb and forefinger...squeezing enough so it couldn't slip free and flop down the hole, as the previous six had...it's eyes bulged slightly from the pressure...she poised the hook just beneath its jaw...the sharp barb pointing up...just as he'd shown her...she closed her eyes as she pushed it up through the skull...hearing a small crunch, like breaking apart fresh lettuce....she felt the minnow shudder...her pulse quickened slitghtly...head spinning...then she opened her eyes...saw the wiggling bait dangling from the hook...and smiled brightly...she'd done it!...all by herself!"

just an idea... smile.gif

The boy probably has an Vexilar FL-18 fish finder. He shows the girl that the fish finder indicates how deep the water is where they are fishing and that the intermittent blips in between the surface and the bottom are fish swimming by. (surface tension LMAO)

First, I'm not much for writing. For an idea though why not try something like this? Have her relate the tying of the fish line to the pole as something like her mother taught her as a young girl to spool the line through the eyelets of the sewing machine, she could tie the line to the hook as she had tied the thread to the needle. For baiting the hook she could relate that to running the needle (hook) through a button and fastening it firmly, yet gently enough so as not to stick her finger (injure the minnow). Just a thought. Good Luck!

Your story need a villain. Have the girl hook into a big, slimy eelpout. They can really mess up a fishouse. My wife lets out quite a yell every time she brings one up. Then there's the usual ruckus about who should take the hook out of it's mouth.

Guys, for all we know they get stranded... and then....the entire planet is wiped out by some Captain Trips type Superflu, or maybe they are stranded when they hear on the news that.... or whatever. Man, I hope I'm not in a fish house when the end of the world comes!

Small minnows are slippery and hard - watermelon seeds might help with the simile.

Hooks are as sharp as or sharper than needles. Lines are weighed down with tiny lead sinkers called split-shot, or a tiny lure called a jig can be put down with a minnow on it. Ice jigs are shiny.

Line is thin, almost invisible and whispy - but very strong. A knot weakens it.

Ice re-forms on the drilled hole while fishing and needs to be scooped or broken out.

Heaters can run out of fuel. Lanterns can break mantles. Gear failure can help you develop plot and suspense.

Gear can either be expensive and specialized, or improvised and cheap - whichever one your characters use may say a lot about them.

Are you looking for item and technique descriptions, or are you looking for an experiential angle? I don't know squat about ice fishing (hi guys) but I know a little about writing. Anything I can do to help, I'd be happy to - except harassment. I'm only attracted to Blonde Phillipino women named 'Celeste'.

I don't know when your paper is due, but to get the true feeling and experience of fishing, you should find someone to take you out ice fishing for the day. It will be much easier to put your thoughts down on paper by actually experiencing your story. Your paper is probably due tomorrow at 8:00am so the info you have received so far should do.

I agree with Grabs, Ghothierman, your one heck of a writer!!! Well done! As far as a villian, how about a game warden happens upon thier cozy little ice-house, and puts an end to their crappie adventure.

Being a college student and a creative writing major myself, I have to say this is the most entertaining set of postings I've ever read.
If you read it from start to finish it's almost like playing that secret game you teach kids to show how a rumour can spread, and by the end the message is completely distorted.
I think it's absolutely hillarious how we've each written a story of our own in our heads and have suggested the best from that ... including villain wardens and the swedish bikin team. Somehow, innocent fiction became a made-for-tv movie starring Rick Schroeder.
Meanwhile, we haven't heard from the author in a week!
You guys are the best!

okay, i have a couple new questions ...

1. can you drive vehicles on the lake when it's frozen? i know you can drive cars; what about trucks? how thick does the ice have to be?

2. when do the houses come off the lake? when is ice out, normally? keep in mind i'm talking about mille lacs.

3. how big is a fish house? the one in my story is owned by a couple of guys together, so i figure it can be sort of on the large size, but not one of those duplex ones or anything.

you guys are the best ...

oh and by the way, i wanted to let you know that the swedish bikini team joke and the slimy eelpout, as well as a couple other suggestions, have definitely made it into my story, which, thanks to you guys, is now 50 pages long (and growing!).

Hello!

You can actually drive trucks and cars onto the ice. You do need 12 plus inches of good clear ice. Personally, I like 18-24 inches myself. We had 3-4 feet of ice here in Minnesota this year, so driving around was not a problem at all.

Ice houses need to be off the ice by February 28 in the south and March 31 in the north. The weather is still boss, but this is the usual guidelines. Ice houses on Mille Lacs vary greatly in size. They can be as big as 12' X 20' copmplete with satellite TV, mini biff and more! The size varies depending on needs od the ice anglers. It is a big sport up here in the north country, there can be as many as 1,000 ice houses on the lake at once!

Good luck on your story...and you picked a great topic!!! grin.gif

Hey icestorygirl:
What type of story are you writing? If it's meant to be "scary" I would suggest that they're stranded in a snow storm in a portable fish house, it could bring a much higher level of danger to the situation.
Paint us a picture and we might be more helpful!
