Heated helmet shield or higher windshield?

Recommended Posts

I recently got a new helmet and I find that when it gets to around 0 to 5 degrees it starts having some fogging issues. If I crouch down below the windshield it seems to be better. Since its gonna be cold this weekend and I'm gonna go riding no matter what the temp is, I'm thinking I better either get a higher than stock windshield or a heated shield. Anyone have a heated helmet shield that has held up well over the years?

Macgyver55,

I've had an Arctic Cat heated shield for at least 6 years and have had no problems with it.

I've found the opposite. If I have a higher windshield it blocks more air flow thru my helmet and it fogs easier, however it's less painful to crack my shield a bit.

I don't have any fogging issues with a low windshield if I keep my breath going down and out of the helmet, open the vents and having a good breath deflector is key.

I'd go with the heated shield. I found the cord is bulky, but they work nicely.

I like my heated face shield. The cable is only a problem when I forget about it and get off the sled. Just under $100 shipped to my door from Dennis Kirk.

The wife and I each have the HJC. It was the best move I have ever made since buying a sled. It is NOT fun to fog up especially at night -- if you look hard enough at enough places you can come across a pretty good deal. A buddy of mine got a helmet that was 60 percent off and a heated shield that was $40. It was black, so not too fancy but works awesome.

Heated shield without question.

I bought a new cat helment last year, it worked great with my 04 F6, then I got my new 08 F8, and now it fogs up even at 32 degrees. I was thinking its the small windsheild, becuase I can no longer crack my sheild open a sliver without getting a strong stream of air into my eyes, which never happened before. I wish or want to get a electric sheild, but I don't think they make one for this helment. I will have to get a higher windsheild. anyone have this problem?

I recently got a snocross style helmet and so far like it (I also had fogging issues with my full face helmet). I have a pretty good tolerance for cold temps, but I was wondering what, if any, extra measures are taken to prevent frostbite with subzero temps and a open helmet.

Thanks!

Those snowcross helmets -- that i why I don;t like them. When it is well below zero, I wonder how good they are against frostbite?

Heated shields are the way to go.

It took one cold weekend for me to realize if I have a planned fishing trip with over a 100 miles of riding across the middle of Lake of the Woods in -30 temps that I need a higher windshield. eek.gif

With the air temp at -1 it wasn't too bad.

My helmet only fogged up once when I blocked the lower part of the helmet to keep the cold air out. My helmet has a great nose-breath deflector, but underneath that is not very protected.

I rode my friend's sled with a higher windshield, and that was the ticket. I warmed up in a hurry! No fogging on either machine regardless of the air temp. I have an HJC helmet and it never fogs up unless I completely blocked the air flow to reduce the pain...

    • Find this on Amazon and you can use Bluetooth. It has 2 different outputs. 3.5mm and RCA:   Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter for Bluetooth Streaming

    • ok I got it figured out, not sure its the best solution but it works.   I thought the 3.5mm jack on the jbl speaker was an output, but its an input so completely scrapped that. I was hoping to go that route so it would charge my phone at the same time.   So instead I opted for this option instead:     It works and I have left and right stereo and its not mono. It sounds ok but I may splurge for a 3.5mm to  digital input cable and see if its worth it.

    • I want to connect my iPhone to an old home theater receiver in my garage I am sure there is lots of ways to do this just trying to think of what would be best.   I have an iPhone with no headphone jack. Not a problem I currently put it on a dock with a speaker. That dock has a 3.5mm out that I should be able to convert into something that would work as an input to the receiver?     Here is the back of the receiver, its an old ONKYO that I had set up as a home theater many years ago. Its been collecting dust in the basement and I still have all of the speakers so I thought, hey I could really jam out in the man cave with some good speakers if I can get everything hooked up correctly   I could go 3.5mm to rca (red and white) and I think that would get me stereo and not mono?   Or could I go 3.5mm to digital optical or 3.5mm to coaxial? See all my options circled in red below?
    • For this episode of the Duffman & Wanderer bass show I present to you the third week of August.   Wed is my usual day to get out. I figure it's before the Thurs night leagues and gives some space from the weekend warriors. Wife had a work party at our house, bonus water time for me. Too bad it was on one of "those" days. Sloooow. Talked to a regular, he agreed it was slow and chimed in "Two days ago though" Argh, that's all I needed to hear after only catching 3 bass in 5 hours. One went 4lbs, a 2ish, and a sub pounder........those little fish aren't usually where I'm fishing.   Gave it another go today...........short biters for me all week. Dealing with some pea green soup water, today was already clearer than Wed. That 4 was blind in one eye, seemed to be a lateral line strike. Maybe that's why they are short?   Had some action today at least, a smaller class of fish,  2.5 - 3 lb range. A half dozen, missed a couple, had two pop off, seen one.......20" class fish. Did the usual #@&%$,!, and casted again. I think I need to sharpen some hooks.  Still cranking, although I jig n pigged today for a tad......I never jig n pig. Forcing myself to try other things.   It's always interesting observing fellow fishermen. There's pressure everywhere these days. You recognize folks that look like they know what they are doing, and others that don't have a clue. I think I seen a 12" screen on a kayak this week!. I watch what people are using on a spot, and once they move on, I have no problem moving in. Fishing seems cyclical, some years are better than other's. That's fishing, hope you are out on the days when the "HOT" bite is going down.    Tune in next week for another episode.
    • To bad your not up here in Minnesota.  There are Ice houses on lots for sale all over this state.  You could stop in with a tape and get the dimensions you need.
