npsmokefan
My choice cement bd. I'm in the process of replacing steel lap siding on a house now from the hail storm that hit New Prague last fall. Homeowner had 4 dents on the whole house and insurance made them replace the entire house. If you get a dent its very difficult to replace steel without tearing a whole side off. Steel will dent if its a big enough hail or whatever. I put cement board on my house as well are many others and never seen a problem. You should never have a problem with cement bd. Certainteed or James Hardi as long as its done correctly.
LundExplorer
I have James hardie fiber cement on my house. The big plus is that it is good in a hail storm. Minus is that you have to maintain it (ie: paint). But, paint stays looking good much longer than compared to hardboard siding.
Enids Hubby
I had my entire house redone in Hardie Plank after a storm and love it. The things to consider are with hardie plank you can pick the lap exposure from 4" to 10 1/4" and can be smooth or cedar texture. They also come in staggered shake panels and scalloped panels . I went with the cedar texure , 5" exposure and put the staggered shake panels above the double stall garage and in the front entry . Before we did it we drove around some new expensive developments and looked what they did . A combination of different exposures and colors makes a big difference. We also used a miratech product for the trim , its a wood fiber material that also comes cedar texured . Hardie Plank can be bought primered, or painted in a few colors some of the colors have hardie trim to match . I did somthing only 1 of the 5 companies offered on mine I had the material including trim sent to an independant coating company that offered many more colors than hardie ( I don't think I'm allowed to say the name on this forum) and it was all prepainted at the factory and plastic wrapped then sent out so no painting was done after installed , and they had color matched caulk . The other thing about Hardie is the butt joints some contractors put flashing in back of every butt joint and some just caulk .Most contractors want to sell you the primed stuff , caulk the joints and paint when done .I had 5 companies come out the ones that would put on the Hardie prepainted stuff wanted me to sign waiver on no matter how scratched up it was they were going to install it . I had a differnce of $6,000 bids for the same job so it pays to shop, shop, shop. The biggest thing I noticed with the Hardie is how much quieter the inside of the house is now when it rains or is real windy . slotlimit
I would go with the steel. I would rather be fishing then painting down the road. If I was rich and knew I was going to hire the painting done down the road they I could go either way on this subject. If you had a 1 story rambler it wouldn't be so bad to paint. It's when you get the 2 or 3 story homes that the guys that have cement board are wishing they did it different. It's a good product though. Gadgetman
I've had seamless steel on my house for 15 years and it hsnt faded a bit tho it does have a few dents from errant baseballs etc. I have a walkout on a hill and the idea of being up three stories on a ladder painting didnt appeal to me at all. Been very happy with it. Oh, yea we had a hail storm a few years back that got me a new roof, but no dents in the siding
kentuck_ike
Send me an e-mail and address. I am in the siding business and can get you info on the differences. [email protected]get a small piece of hardie plank, and put it in a bucket of water and see how long it takes to wick from one end to the other.
