Let's say you post a really nice pic here. What precautions can you take, or what do you do, to keep from anyone "stealing" your image and using it elsewhere in a publication, for profit, etc...

There's little you can do. There mostly are legal actions you can take after the image has been stolen.

Couple things you can do: You can use any number of post processing programs to put your name and copyright on the image, but anyone who's decent in photoshop can remove that later. Your images are copyrighted the moment you take them, though you can specifically register a photo for copyright with . . . uh . . . I forget which office. Someone help me out here? One precaution is not to post large images. If you post them 72 dpi and 600 pixels on the long side, sure, they can be stolen for other Web use, but that size is too small and low-resolution to make a decent print out of.
