ZR580 Carb Settings

Recommended Posts

I have a 96 ZR580 that has a hard time idling by its self when cold and after it has been warmed up it seems like I always need to use the choke to restart it. I've cleaned the carbs but I must have something adjusted wrong. It does seem to run pretty rich. Anyone have any suggestions on what adjustments I could make to it?

If its just running too rich, you could change a jet size. Look on the clutch cover and there should be a jetting chart on there and see where you are at.

Another possibility would be checking your air screws. I think they should be out 1 1/2 turns on those carbs, but I can't remember for sure, you better check that. Another thing that could be a problem is if the choke cables on the two carbs aren't set the same they can be working against each other a little, also for that matter while you are checking, make sure the needles are set on the same level too...

Good luck.

First things first Every time I have seen this problem It has been one idle jet partially plugged. In 95% of all cases the owner was using Stable or sea foam. A 96 zr pumps alot of oil into the crank case which can make the exhaust looks rich. Don't touch the air screws or main jet, pull the carbs out soak them. Also another check is when you feel the sled is acting up open the choke just alittle if it runs better it's not too rich. Or give me a call which would have been better tan posting anyway.

JZ....tried to call you but you must have been way too busy working on your own sleds or you looked at your caller ID and decided that my call wasn't important enough.

redtrucks-

Sounds alot like my 1992 EXT 550. I have to pay attention to that sled for about 5 minutes while it is warming up. Once that engine hits some sort of magical temperature, it'll idle down on its own and purr like a kitten. smile.gif

I do have my idle set a tad lower than it probably should be however.

I usually have to give it half choke and pull once or twice to start it after its been running.

    • I did put some runner rugs down the center 😁
    • This team is not going anywhere with  Tom Thibodeau as there coach.

    • Wisconsin's traditional nine-day gun deer hunting season opens this Saturday and with snow in many northern areas and more in the forecast for Friday into Saturday but with otherwise relatively mild hunting conditions it should make for a good opener.Hunters can find all the information they need by searching the DNR HSOforum for keyword "deer." Or new for this year, hunters with mobile devices can download the Hunt Wild Wisconsin mobile app, which provides mapping, shooting hours and easy access to regulations. Hunters can download the app from the DNR HSOforum at keywords "hunt app."Little Manitou Falls at Pattison State Park has begun to ice over. Skim and shelf ice is forming on lakes and some smaller lakes have frozen over.Photo credit: DNRThis is the earliest possible opening of the season and while it is winding down in some areas, rutting activity is still noticeable with bucks visiting their scrapes and rubs and still being seen chasing does. A reminder that hunters must register their deer by 5 p.m. the day after recovery and registration is now easier than ever online, by phone or in person at registration stations. Search the DNR HSOforum for "GameReg," for details. Hunters can get a deer tested for CWD at no cost and can find sampling locations by searching for keywords "CWD Sampling." .
    • It looks great! Throw a few nonslip rugs down.  It's Winter after all! 😋
    • I converted mine to 1 ton Reese 12v winch. Seems to work well with my light weight wheel house.
    • Looks great but cold and slippery, I'm a carpet guy.
    • absolutely 100% yes. Like with the augers though, use a good drill. My Ryobi barely does both sides once on a battery, my Fuel is 1000 times better. It's not recommended to go down with a drill, only up. You'll see all this on Nutz w e b s i t e.
    • I missed it too, the caps always just own us.
