HELP - Vexilar FL-18 issues

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a problem with the bottom indication on the zoom side of the display moving up to the 2' mark on the scale? I just had the new update done by Vexilar and it was supposed to fix that. Now it is still happening. It will go back down to the 0' mark if I shut the vexilar off and turn it back on. My FL-18 is one of the first ones that were sold. This seems to happen if it is on for an hour or two steady. Kind of worthless considering it should be on all the time while you're fishing. I'm really curious if anyone else has this problem??

This is an issue with the FL-18...mostly when pulling from one hole to another in AZ mode, or when pulling transducer to ice a fish and then dropping back in. Vex's fix is...turn to Normal, turn gain all the way up...turn back to AZ...then adjust gain back to your previous mode. Its a pain in the rear...but thats what you have to do. OR, go back to normal before pulling the transducer out of the hole...

or......ask CNYTim what he would do wink.gif

I've had the same issue. It seems to go away after a little bit, but like you say, it appears that the bottom jumps up to 2 feet on the zoom side. Sounds like there are a few remedies, but whats the cause? Good post!!

I have the same stupid problem with mine! Sometimes it is way worse-especially in really clear water. Ive had it messed up all the way past the 5' mark at times and no matter what you do it will not go away. I wonder what that is all about? Hopefully someone from Vexilar will see this post...

My FL-18 just started doing this also. I also turn the zoom on/off to fix it.

The original problem was initially soft bottom reading, basically the zoom would not hold, had the update free of charge from Vexilar and two outings later the same thing happened. Sold it immediately and purchased another LX-3, end of story...

Thanks Tim, I was wondering if you missed my (mostly) tounge in cheek remark!!grin.gif

It really IS a pain to deal with...but I will have to deal with it for a couple more years at least until a new.....flasher...is in my budget!!

I had just received the Vex back from Vexilar Inc. just before December and they performed a free software upgrade that was supposed to solve that problem and it didn't. I guess I'll be sending Vexilar Inc. another e-mail!!! confused.giffrown.gif

Let me know what they say, Feet, cause I sent mine in and they sent it back with the instructions on how to counter it...which makes me think they cant really "fix" it. Now, my buddy has the dual ducer and it doesnt happen to him as often...

I also have the same problem. A quick power on/off usually takes care of the problem. I've had my FL-18 for 3 years now. I see people on this post mention an "upgrade" from Vexilar. Can any one tell me about this "upgrade" and if I need to send my 3 year old unit in to have this done. Thanks.

I recently took my fl18 to vexilar because I thought it made to much noise. They were very helpful and fixed my problem and during our conversation I brought this problem up to the tech and he told me to do what everybody here is saying turn it off then on, Never said anything about an upgrade.

It is a circuit upgrade for Vex's with a serial # within a specific range...if yours is 3 years old you may want to check it out. I sent mine in to get the 300' mode upgrade..they just somehow zap the circuit board and the "upgrade" is done. I did mine 2-3 years ago...The problem is as simple as when you move the ducer while the unit is on in zoom mode, it loses bottom and has a hard time re-aquiring...unless you turn it off or adjust from AZ to norm and back. Go to Vex's web site and poke around

    • Hello from the NW Angle!   Minnesota snowmobile trail conditions are in good shape. The Baudette trail is great north of Knight Island. Walleye action heats up in periods of stable weather. The best catching is happening in 21-25ft, with the most productive method being a dead-stick beside an actively jigged rattle bait such as a buckshot or rippin’ rap. Glow white/pink is out producing other colors. The late ice bite can be phenomenal on Lake of the Woods, ice permitting we will have houses out through the end of the month!   Canadian fishing is recommended via snowmobile as they are light enough not to drop into the slush as easy as other track vehicles. Crappies are still filling buckets and walleye are actively feeding on reef break lines and points. Walleye season is open through April 14th.    Sunset Lodge
    • Stuff is getting hard to find so best load up on ammo I'd you find it.  Many have rebates going now so that helps some.   I haven't shot the new Feferal TSS shot yet but guys that have report excellent patterns and downrange energy.  Luke Don mentioned 45 yards is doable depending on your gun's pattern.  Two springs ago my dad dumped a big Tom at 54 yards, (misjudged the yardage and bird was working away) with the federal heavyweight in 6 shot with his 20 gauge.  I'm not advocating for shooting those distances, but it's a testmate to how far this ammo has come.
    • I've been seeing them in corn fields and around home owner homes.
    • if you have gone through a set of carbides in 1000 miles you definitely need to change them now as you are getting a lot of wear
    • Just a reminder this Seminar is tonight.
    • I did shoot the RX-1 but there was more hand vibration and a little louder. RX-3 did not have any of that . Also could just be in my head but felt smoother in the draw too.
    • Fan of the stealth bomber look.
    • Did you shoot the rx1? If you did... what made you pick the rx3 over rx1?
    • just remember that water will follow the path of least resistance, meaning  that it may look like it is all contained to one area but the water may have been running across a beam to another area altogether.  I work in insurance and see and hear very unique situations often!.
    • I wish manufacturers would offer a truck that is "hunter friendly". 1. I want a truck that has keyless entry, so if I lock my keys in or lose them in the woods it doesn't matter. 2. I want to be able to turn my headlights off when the truck is running, so I can wait for shooting light without the high beams cutting through the trees. 3.The loud DING-DING-DING when the door is opened would not be necessary because of #1.  4. Run flat tires would be standard. 5. A handy man style jack with solid spots to jack from on the outside of the truck and 2 spares also. 6. Heated cup holder with direct wiring so when I get back to the truck after a morning sit in a cold tree, my coffee is still hot. No leaky thermos putting my coffee on my seat. 7. Winch and arm mounted to the bed to load big game with 1 hand.  8. Matte finish camo and no chrome to reflect sunlight. 9. Remote start works from over 1 mile away, or pre heated coolant so you have heat instantly. 10. Bullet holders on the door and dash so they aren't rolling around on the floor when you need them. 11. Spot light for pre season shining, where legal.  12. 4 wheel steering for dead end trail turnaround.  13. Built in heated/cooled dog kennel.   One wouldn't necessarily need all of these, but to customize the package to Hunter's preference would be great. What would your hunting rig have on it to improve your success and pleasure??
