What bow to buy.

Recommended Posts

Well, I finally did it. I'm hanging up my old Hoyt and moving on to a matthews. I have been looking for a new bow eversince I had a mishap this fall with a monster buck. I shot the fred bear instinct and the (matthews made) Mission bow. Of the two, I really liked the Mission. The Instinct was nice but had too much vibration for the price tag. The mission had everything that I was looking for. It was about $400 all camo, or 300 with black riser. It had little hand shock, lots of speed, and was quiet. As I was leaving, I told the guy that I'd buy the mission if my buddy didn't sell me his switchback. He asked if I ever shot one and I said no. He then said that I had to shoot one. I did, and it was a big mistake, like going over to the darkside. I started doing some looking into prices. It would cost me just as much to buy a new mission with accessories as it would to buy a used Switchback XT that already had some with it. So,today I bought the Switchback XT, now I'm just waiting for it to arrive. By the way, There are a ton of Switchbacks for sale on hsolist, the Drenalins must be flying off the shelves. It has been nerve racking trying to get a good deal, but I believe that for what I got, I paid roughly half of what its worth. $600 for the bow, a G5 lighted sight, and a trophy taker rest. Was this a good deal?

I would say so...I'm debating getting a new bow this year but the money is tight. Let us know how you like it. BTW - don't the Switchbacks come with only one draw length setting? Oh yeah, and you just lost all excuses for this fall with that new toy ya got coming! wink.gif

I dont know if you got a steal but then price doesnt sound to bad for the items you received.

I just called a shop and now I would say you received a pretty good deal. They quoted me a price of $794 for the XT, bare bones.

Cooter, you are correct in the draw lenght. You can change it approx 1/2 if you use a loop.

Funny how much you learn by becoming a smart consumer. Matthews likes to make you buy a cam if you want to adjust your draw length. Draw length can sometimes be adjusted with the letoff, but its usually only a 1/2 inch increment Example 29" at 80% let off but at 29 1/2" its 65% let off. I felt most comfortable with the 29" draw length. I know that I have now lost all excuses for any misses next year. If I miss now, I just plain suck.

Yep, thats a decent deal. You can easily end up at 2X that price for a new unit fully set-up and outfitted.

Welcome aboard brother grin.gif

You would have been OK with that Mission bow too, I shot one a few weeks back and its a great bow for the money. I plan to buy one for my son this spring.

You've saved a ton of money on the used bow. That is great news.

Now, Mathews will no-longer recognize the warranty because it's a second hand bow (you are not the original purchaser). That $ucks.

Why don't they have transferable warranties?

Yea, you got a good deal. I got my mathews q2 on hsolist about 5 years ago. It was a steal, I couldn't pass it up. I've been watching the xt's on hsolist too. I'm thinking about it...

I got the bow. It basically came with everything but the arrows and release. I can still buy the accessories on it, they total about 250 bucks. The bow was bought in October 2006. After looking at it, I am pleased with the purchase. Not bad for just over $600. I can't wait to shoot it. I haven't looked on hsolist anymore, but I was looking for about 3 weeks prior to buying. I checked it everyday and was constantly looking for the buy it now tag. I finally found a buy it now for 600 bucks and jumped at it. Most of the others are 700+ if it has anything on it. The bare XT bow was bringing 575 used. The deals are there if you just keep watching. Good luck.

I purchased a MQ two years ago and have been very happy in its performance and unless a drop dead deal came along, I think I will be hanging on to the old MQ

    • I'm sure it's tasty, but I have never tried dog either. Calm down people, I am just kidding around.   We used to keep landscaping supplies out on a farm in Rosemount back in the day, and blast away at them when they emerged from the barn. Sticking with the Clint theme.............. Farm cats gotta eat, same as worms.   Being a member of the dove family, I am sure the meat is simular.
    • Remember, he liked the neighbors food after he tried it. 😋
    • I fished most of the lake in scout mode today.  Found walleyes early on midlake humps and bars in 18-24 fow.  Got a couple to go on jigging raps but then they shut off.  Spent the rest of the day trying to pin down a panfish pattern.  Found good numbers of sunfish in shallow cabbage beds(6-9 fow).  None were huge but good numbers of 8-8 1/2" gills.  A few crappies are mixed in with them and some are suspending off the break.  There are also good numbers of sunfish in or just outside the reeds.   Most of the sunfish ran smaller though although there were some keepers there too.  Pike and bass I did not target but saw others do so successfully.   Plenty of bass in the reeds and spinnerbaits seemed to be what most were using.   Troll over the weeds and you will be rewarded with pike.
    • I got primary on the Crow-Hassen with a rank of #21. New experience for me as well, with MBRB, been a member for a few years just could never get a hunt.   DanBo - That was one I had on my list as I have a buddy that lives just a few blocks up from there.
    • try them before you knock them....
    • we've only  used the adapter so far at the campsites, as I've only seen the standard plug in's at the boxes; and only running some lights and AC at the most at one time, no fridge to run
    • That is crazy nice Hoey.  😎   But for $3,400 I'll just keep my dirt flakes on the floor and may be pick up another used sled or wheeler! 😋
    • Yes, its a 110v motor. I would've preferred 12v also but not a big deal since all my 110v outlets can be fed from an inverter so they are powered whether the generator is running or not. I think what you mentioned with the single shaft between them will be the ticket. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
    • When I was a kid, we came across a small flock of pigeons along a railroad track while grouse hunting. Shot three and my mom put them in a crockpot with other ingredients and, although I prefer grouse, they weren’t bad.
