Outside the Twins and Gophs hockey all our teams suck real real bad! I can't remember the last time our teams have been this bad as a group. Oh, well, gives us something to look forward too anyway...now on to ice fishing! (if is stops raining)

It's about time Maturi finally came to his senses. Wonder how much pressure he got from the boosters. Now Maturi's legacy is who he hires as coaches for bb and fb. I hope we go after some proven coaches that can do some good recruiting and get the Gopher program back to respectability. The football coach will be key since they will be getting a new stadium. Would be good to have some winning seasons as they move into it. Once the bowl games are over it will be interesting to see who is interested and who the U is interested in. I really hope they open up the pocket book to lure a big time candidate for both open positions. I've stopped watching many of the bb and fb games because of the coaches and their poor recruiting.

Holy cow! I thought this may be an early April Fools joke until I confirmed it on Star Trib HSOforum. Good for U of M. It's been a long time coming. That should wipe that smug look off his face. Can't wait to listen to Dan Barreiro tomorrow! Dave Mona over at 'CCO can officially take his knee-pads off now.

Minnesota has one good team and its their wrestling team at least they are consistant winners year in year out!!!!! The other teams at the U should look at how they train and take some notes I bet Konrad the heavy weight would be a better lineman than the football starters

It was the best thing that the U of M did by getting rid of Mason. The program was not getting any better. And have a huge lead at half time and blowing up for the lose, was a joke in my eyes. Who is the gophers looking at getting, hopefully they stay away from the old papa from Arizona that was canned as well.

No doubt Maturi will pick some no name, small college bargain basement coaches for each program. In my opinion Maturi needs to go also. Both teams need coaches who can recuit and retain players. In fact the U needs to change it's attitude towards it's athletic programs and make them a priority for once. There is no reason that acedemics and athletics can't co-exist at the U of Mn.

Best rumor I've heard is Tony Dungy coming home to coach the U following an early exit by the Colts. Dungy bringing in recruits to a new stadium would bring this program into respectability in my opinion.

Any other rumors of new coaches.

Maturi's ineptitude is what's getting lost in the firings as both of these coaches should have been gone before this. Instead, they are given big $$ extensions and then fired. If he had any clue what so ever the extensions would have never been granted.

The Indianapolis newspaper reports that Dungy is not interested in the U of M job.

From the Indy Star:

Meanwhile, Dungy's name has been linked to the head coaching vacancy at the University of Minnesota. The Golden Gophers fired Glen Mason and apparently have Dungy -- a standout quarterback at Minnesota from 1973-76 -- on their list of candidates.

Minnesota officials have not contacted Dungy, and he indicated they would be wasting their time if they do.

"I'm not a college coach, never been a college coach,'' he said. "I think it's more just the name recognition and the fact I'm an alum.

"I'm flattered, but not interested. Very flattered.''

Ya, but nobody cares. Wrestling is right up there with Women's volleyball or men's tennis as far as a following.

Mason getting canned was good IMO, but Maturi is the one to blame through all of this. He just wasted TONS of the school's money by signing him long term last year and by doing the same with Monson, then firing them and having to pay them huge severance packages. Maturi is the one that has run our revenue producing sports into the ground.

However.....

He does have a chance to leave his mark on U athletics in a positive way if he does indeed get to spend some big-time $$.

The way our University President talks, money will not be a limiting factor in hiring either the Football or Basketball coaches.

I think you'll see us sign at least one major big-time coach. This new stadium is Maturi's baby and he is gonna want a good team to play in it. As far as basketball, we have the BARN, it is a great place to play and the fans would come back and rock it in a hearbeat with a couple years of good teams.

We CAN win at Minnesota, just need some leaders in place thay know how to do it. There is nothing that Wisconsin has on Minnesota as a school, but year after year they produce winners, while the U has troubles. I for one am ready to join the tops of the BigTen, it has been a long time coming.
