Auger for newbie

I'm easing into this hard water thing and stocking up on some essentials.

For the time being, I dont' think I'm going to dump a whole lot of ching, so will a hand auger be enough, and if so what kind and size should I buy?

I'm picking up a VX-1 tomorrow so I will need something to make a few holes.

Hand auger will be fine til ya get about 8-10" then its more work than fun. I use my hand auger til 8" then after that its Nils swiss cheese time.

Just go with someone with a power auger and if ya like it buy a used power auger. If you still like it buy a new power auger when ya get the cash.

Hand Augers work quite well with sharp blades.

I would suggest a Strikemaster Lazer hand auger, either 6" or 8".

6" is much easier to cut with, although your hole is smaller as well, which means a tougher time with bigger fish coming up through it.

Hanson, don't forget about the Lazer 7". I picked one up from Reed's at the ice fishing show. It is the perfect size. Easy to drill and plenty big.

I would go with the Nils Hand Auger. Why work harder than you have to???? Plus you can always add the power head later if you decide that you want to continue icefishing.
