Ice Auger Preferance

OK, I know that this debate goes on every year, but I want to hear the opinions again. I am torn between a StrikeMaster Lazer Mag Xpress, a Jiffy Legend LIGHTning and a Jiffy White LIGHTning. I am looking for peoples experience with each, their preference. I am also looking for good and bad things about all the models. And finally things liek balde durability, etc. Thanks to all in advance.

I have a 2 hp Jiffy Stealth 8 inch and have no complaints about it. I have had Jiffys for the last 16 years or so. One thing that I like is that the auger will take some abuse and I can sharpen the blade myself. I have sharpened the blade one time in the last four years just for something to do. I had a 3 hp Jiffy before this one and went to a 2hp because I am older and the 2hp is lighter.

StrikeMaster for me.. I have run the Lazer Mags for years now and have had not problems with any of the ones I have used. Very reliable cutting machine. One of the biggest benefits you get from StrikeMaster over Jiffy is the weight of the auger. The 8 inch Lazer Mag has a few pounds shed off of her compared to the Jiffy models. A big plus for drilling lots of holes throughout the day. And the blades, as long as you do not bang them on the ice or drill through sand, etc they will last a long time. The shaver blades cut very well!!!

The Jiffy's you are looking at are a bit less in price I do believe (30 bucks or so between the Legend Lighting and the Lazer mag), but less weight is more then worth this cost. Plus, if you do some looking you might find a year old or two year old auger at a killer price.

I have a 3hp Jiffy Stealth and it cuts very good but I would not buy another. This thing works well but you get very tired holding the brute if you are going to cut 15-20 holes.

I would stay away from the heavy models.I did use a Nils once and that baby is light and cut very well and also started nice.Very good auger for the one time I used it.

If you re open holes go with a Jiffy and a ice armor chipping blade. For cutting a lot of holes go light and a 2 horse model. I had the 3 horse 10" Jiffy and it was way HEAVY. I run a Nils now and wont go back to another auger til something lighter and faster comes out. They are a bit more pricey but well worth it. Plus you have a hand auger when you buy one as they come with the hand auger handle when you buy the power auger.

I've have a Strikemaster 2hp Lazer Mag Express 8-inch for about 8 years now and it still runs just fine and cuts a pretty fast hole. I've also used the Nils Master and it cuts like butter and is very lightweight.

I'm looking at giving the Strikemaster Strike-Lite a try this winter. I tried it a couple times last winter and it's a very nice auger. Between the Nils and the Strike-Lite, you're going to get lightweight and fast cutting...
