Trolling Motor Plug

BigWadeS

Question

I am in need of some help. I have a motor mounted trolling motor that doesn't work. Battery is fully charged, no fuse direct wired to battery. I pulled the plug and it is corroted and doesn't look good. My question is can I use a normal, from Menards or Home Depot, kind of replacement plug or does it need to be a marine trolling motor plug replacement?

Also cleaning the wires I noticed the original plug(?) had a +, -, and ground connection but only 2 wires (+, -). Is it wired as such or is it something special?

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated,

I'm not certain if getting a regular outlet plug in would be ok or not.. it's not the norm, and I can't say that I have seen it done, but it probably would work.

If I understand your second question... your trolling motor plug has 3 wires coming out of it, but only two are connected, right? The third wire is for a 24 volt trolling motor (with 2 batteries).

I wasn't very clear...

I have two wires (positive & negagtive) however the plug when I took it apart was a 3 hole plug (positive, neg, and ground) with 2 wires shouldn't it be a 2 hole plug?

The sockets and plugs have multiple contacts to allow 12/24 volt operation. Typically, they come with instructions on how to wire them for 12 or 24 or 12/24 operation.

I'd be hesitant about using a common household plug just in case one of your buddies mistakes it for the battery charger and decides it should be connected to the extension cord...
