The first question I would ask is what specie are you planning on starting out to fish for. That will help with what you need to buy.

One of the first things I would look for would be a vexilar or marcum if its in the budget. You will see in the coming months some of these items for sale in the For Sale forum.

If a portable house is also in the budget, you will also find some very nice used units for sale also. smile.gif

if you're just starting you don't need much. A hand auger, a couple jiggle sticks and a 5 gallon bucket. I fished with those items for years and as time went on, I learned more about the sport and years later, here I am with 3 fish houses, power auger, more rods and reels than I can count, vexilar, camera....you name it, I have it for hard water. I wouldn't go all out right away, go out, have fun, catch fish and start talking to us on the ice and you will learn alot about what you want/need, or think you'd be able to live without!!! I spent plenty of days on a bucket fishing through one hole, because that one hole took me a half hour to drill through 3+ feet of ice by hand, but I still went home with the same amount of fish I do now out of my warm shacks!!!

And so very true . Good post lad . I got soaked by the axe and thought chisel was great and hand auger saved us thru 3ft of ice and now power and some tech i like better but regardless of the tools if you dont know where to put transducer down you can spend alot of time looking . Hitting interior lakes look at the shoreline .Steep ridges .sand on a rocky, lake and likely weeds .Likely fish holding spots and the graph, flasher etc just confirms it ....lol Good tools and knowing how to use them alongside the knowledge will work but long way from all . It started with the basics i chopped hole with axe at 20 something below and there wern't many but we caught fish.

With the higher pressure of areas and smaller concentrations of fish . I'll accept the most tools I can afford but fish are just fish .Get the basics and odds are holes are already drilled there .

Trapper... wink.gif Where you been hide'n?

And to the new fisher... If there was a way for me to send you some basics to get started, I've got a pile of the "basic" gear that I have since I seem to buy a lot of new gear each year, I know I have about 20 jiggle sticks that need a home shocked.gif
