1999 150 Yammy Vmax

Scoot

Question

Who can tell me what about this motor? Good and solid? Flakey and not dependable?

I'm looking at a used boat that has this motor on it and any info would be appreciated.

I have a 1994 V Max 150 and have never had a problem whatsoever except a carb cleaning once which I did myself.

When I was looking for boats at the time, I was looking for this motor and the boat was secondary. The only downside would be the mileage compared to a newer fuel injected motor but I still don't think I'm that far off of what those would be in the big picture. I get around 3 MPG up and running around. Most big motors, even the fuel injected are similar when running. Idling and slower speeds they are better though. This motor pushes my ranger 690 to around 54 MPH GPS.

I have a 96 skeeter with a 1997 V-Max 150. It's a great motor. I decarbonize and winterize every year and change plugs every other year. I've never had a problem (knocking on wood right now). The motor starts great, idles super, and is ultra smooth going in and out of gear. I've owned mercs, johnsons, and ran almost every motor on the market and I think that motor is one of the top 10 ever. I'm a big yamaha fan after running this one. As it was stated earlier it's real pig on gas at W.O.T. My 33 gallon tank can be drained with a lot of high speed runs but running at about 4,500-5,000 rpm's my mileage about doubles. My best top end is 63mph gps, with a 25 yamaha prop and I have my jackplate low in the water. I was thinking on steping up to a tempest 26 this year but I hate to mess with my blistering holeshot. As long as you have good compression and a good history of the motor including maintence, you cant go wrong.

I have a 99 on my Lund ProV 1800. I bought it new and it gets lots of use. I do the service according to Yamaha's recommendations. The only problem I had was one of the fuel pumps went on me. The mechanic that fixed it said that fuel pumps going bad are not common to the engine. It was just one of those things that happen. This engine is a powerful and fast engine. It is not an economy model as far as fuel consumption is concerned.
