Heart Breaking....

Recommended Posts

Went out yesterday and decided to spend the entire day on the water. Pretty slow going with an occasional hit here and there during the day. But once nightfall hit, heartbreak followed.....The sun had just gone down and I was photographing the sunset on the water. I had just snapped a shot and panned over to include my buddy in a picture, when through the lense I see him gasp and yell "WHOA!" as I see his rod double over in obvious "Big fish" fashion. Just as soon as it happened, in the same instance, the rod holder breaks free from the boat and manages to hang on somehow. After quickly grabbing the rod and slowing up the boat, I see his face go white. Gone.....After reeling up the line, the lure is gone, as well as the leader. Well, half the leader. This fish not only almost pulled the rod holder completely out of the boat, but broke the leader as well. Trying to piece together what had just happened, with several scenarios running through our heads, there was no doubt whatsoever that this fish was enormous. In 20' of water with a lure that runs 8' max, theres nothing else it could have been. Just shows you that even with the heaviest equipment, some fish weren't meant to be caught.

That is something isn't it. My wife and I were casting over a mid lake hump (20' water 8' rock hump) and we both had large lures bitten off through the leader. Her leader was Surflon 46lb knottable leader wire and mine was 125lb test Mason multi-strand - no signs of crimp failure on either. Somewhere is a big pike with some serious hardware in its mouth.

Reminds me of a time about 6 year ago when me and my dad were at a fly-in canada fishing trip. We were catching 2-4 lb. northerns like crazy and we came up to this tiny little bay. I flung my daredevil up to the shallows and was in the middle of my retrieve and i felt a little "walleye tap" and then my rod just got heavy. I set the hook and it felt like i set into a rock, then instantly nothing. I came up with a half of a leader. Then my dad immediatly whipped his out there and instantly had a huge hit. He had the fish on for about 2 seconds and there was nothing he could to even budge it. Then nothing, and up comes another half of a 50# steel leader. We were just amazed and just felt defeated. I would have done anything just to see the fish.
