Gigantic Pike

Recommended Posts

Okay, I was sent this picture of a 54 inch, 44 lb Northern Pike that was supposedly cought on Rainy Lake. I have not seen this put up on any fishing sites and was wondwering if anybody knows about it or if you think it's a fake somehow.

I heard about it from Jonesi a couple weeks ago, and he said that he heard about it from a "reputable source". Take that as you wish......

That thing makes me look like I have abs of steel!!!

I remember seeing the photo somewhere, maybe a few years back in email or maybe one afternoon while board off my arse at work and browsing the internet, and something is telling me that thing is was caught in Europe.

Anyway I believe that fish is from Rainy Lake like I believe the fish below is from LOTW/Rainy River like the email I recieved told me it was. After having done a little research I discovered that the Sturgeon was caught in British Columbia on the Fraser river and is actually VERY REAL, now that would be fun.

I just google imaged 'northern pike'and looked at some of the larger pictures. I see a jaw line and gill plate. Also look at the tail fins on some of those big pike.

I'd call it real.

It doesn't have the same fin config. as a gar nor does it have the same jaw structure of an alligator gar, on a gar, the upper jaw is longer than the lower jaw, and that does not appear to be the case in that picture. The double line is the jaw line and the gill cover. If it's real or not who knows, would be nice to have more pictures. When there is only one picture, it can easy to discredit.

If you look in the boat you see alot of musky/northern baits laying around making me think the picture is a legit Northern Pike, I just dont think it was caught on Rainy though. Im guessing Europe also.

i work on photo shop all the time in my Marketing and advertising classes, and I believe that the photo is manipulated. (fake) i think it has 2 gill plates and if you look at the tail, it is choppy like they used the mouse to cut the picture, also, it seems like they used a light shading on the edge which is typical. if the pic isn't fake and I am pretty sure that it is, it is one hell of a fish.

Ive been trying to study that picture - and some things look very real - and some dont look so right. Where his right arm goes under the fish just doesnt look right - but at the same time where his left hand is cradling the fish looks very real - and looks like it would be something that would be difficult to fake....I also (and I am not stereotyping) think the guys looks european - and also the landscape on the horizon just doesnt look anything like rainy or from anything close to or around here...

It's porbably a Baltic Sea pike caught in Sweden. Look in the background you will see the rollers. Pike pushing 60lbs are caught in several locations in Europe. For some reason (fishing pressure?) pike get much larger in Europe than they do here. Do some Google searching and you'll see pike photos than put our muskies to shame.

That looks like a European Pike. They have a different look to them, and that's what they look like. Plus, if someone caught a Northern that big. You'd think they'd take a better picture than that.

Google a Euro Pike, and take a look at it.

I've read enough Esox Angler to know that there are monster pike in Europe. I'm not questioning or doubting that fact and I think most of us can agree on that as well. It very well could be a legitimate 44lb pike.

But there are a lot of goofy things with that photo, thats all I'm saying.

Can anyone get a good close up of the logos on the guys jacket? That might tell something, European brand or something, just a thought..........

I tried but I can only blow up a fish picture so big at work without drawing attention to my screen from the boss man!
