Muskies Suck

nuts

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with this muskie disease sometime last year and told my girlfriend, “Let’s start fishing for muskies.” So we did. But before we did, we ‘had to’ spend $547.34 on a net, new rods and reels, new tackle boxes and dozens of bucktails and other assorted seagull sized baits. We picked up some movies so we’d know what we’d be in for and what we had to do. We then proceeded to battle the wind, the rain, the blazing sun and busted through ice looking for these stupid things with nada fish in da boat.

Grr.

So this year we started the season with our expectations set low. Really low (and, of course, even more baits). When my sore back, arms, and legs were telling me “For cripes sake, STOP IT!” thoughts of trading my bucktails for lindy rigs were starting to float through my head. With last year and this year combined we’ve had 26 follows, 2 missed hits and then FINALLY the muskie gods smiled on us with this 40 incher.

How do you guys keep going when this ‘fish of 10,000 casts’ becomes seemingly impossible to catch?

Thats exactly what keeps me going...the challenge. And the fact that i can be sitting on mille lacs or alot of other lakes casting for days and not getting a bite and on that one cast catch the fish of a lifetime, making it all worthwhile. Just have to keep in mind why you are out there and what its all really about. Good times with good friends, definitely good excercise and the unknown always out there. If it was a numbers game alot of us would have quit a long time ago. Just when you cram all the knowledge you can get in all winter and think you have it figured out the fish proves that even though it has a brain the size of slip sinker it can give us fits , make us look like complete idiots and keep us awake at night. Its the only sport i know of where you can beat yourself up for days not even seeing the end goal and say i cant wait to do it all over again tomorrow!! That my friend is what musky hunting is all about.

Man i love this sport.!!

it never ends. and just when you think you have them figured out...... the rules change. everything changes. be happy you still have a girlfriend. musky fishing has cost me two good ones. have you read the book "muskys suck". its a good read and i often find myself in the same spots.

when you give up and call it quits a have a whole garage full of walleye gear that only gets used for those few weeks before musky season i can trade ya. rods, reels, rigs, spinners, floats, hooks, raps - you name it i got it and its all to small......

I hope nuts doesn't mind, I just thought I would help him out as he sounds a little worked up and might end up beating the keyboard to a pulp... hehe wink.gif

If you are using Internet Explorer right click on the RED X and select show picture.

I feel your pain nuts. I think, well atleast in my opinion, MuskyDanno about summed up the whole sickness in that one perfectly layed out paragraph.

Nahh – I’m not worked up. Actually, I’m still smiling because I finally got one! It just amazes me how tough these fish can be. I used to think walleyes were picky. tongue.gif

I should have prefaced the post in saying that the ‘Muskies Suck’ thing is a running joke in our boat. We’ve both got the sickness and aren’t giving up on it. When we’re in the middle of a glorious sunburn during the summer or shivering in the cold fishing these things with nothing to show for it we’ll look at each other and say “Muskies Suck” and then smile. I guess we’re just making fun of ourselves for being so obsessed.

So, I was just curious if these dry spells are typical and if they are, what keeps you guys going?

I know the whole good times in the boat, the commune with nature and time with friends thing. You can get all those fishing bullheads. What is it about this fish that gets in your blood, haunts your dreams and empties your checkbook?

Nuts, here at the stats for me from Opener 2005 to this date. 3 in the boat on the 2005 opener, 31", 39" and 41". Next fish was a chunky girl on September 16th 2005. I had many lost fish in between. And that brings us to today, nothing since last september, and it's funny how I just burn to get back out on the water...

all i have left to say is it only gets worse. when you start "smelling the weeds" on your spot to see if there are fish near by then you have moved to a new level. blush.gif i have more issues..... but thats another subject

That's a very good question Nuts. Wish I knew the answer. I've only been at it for a little more then two years and it's all I think about. I can spend 15 hours on the lake, not see a fish all day, get a really bad sunburn, get mad as hell and on the way home all I can think about is doing it again tomorrow. tongue.gif All the guys at work think I'm crazy. The girlfriend doesn't understand it, but I'm working on that. It truely is a sickness and is something that I'll probably never understand. I think Danno summed it up pretty good. It's the challenge and knowing that the "fish of a lifetime" is only one cast away.

It's not a curable diease to my knowledge. I'm in the middle of a long dry spell - only 1 44" fish over the last twelve months - after several years of high teens every summer. But the sight of a 50+" fish is all I need to get revved up again. The next cast may be the one. Just be thankful you only have $500 into it so far. I have to use the Internet to order from Thorne Bro. Costs me way too much to walk into that store in person.

I haven't even caught one yet and I've already got the disease. Watched dad's buddy drag one by the boat that grabbed a nice smallmouth (what I USED TO really like to fish). Figured it was at least 50". Since that day about 3 weeks ago, haven't fished for anything else. Got ahold of me like duck hunting, and I might as well marry any girl who will put up with me for a full fall thru summer cycle. shocked.gif

Yeah, it's funny how fast you catch this sickness. Everytime my girlfriend gets a follow she starts shaking like she just shot a deer! shocked.gif

Who knows what she'll do when she finally hooks one.

I get such a kick out of how we can not recall what we did two days ago, can't remember birthdays/anniversaries, etc.....but we call recall the date, time, weather, lure, location, depth, water temp, what you were wearing, who was with of every single "big fish" incident that we have!!!

Ain't that the truth.

Recently I had to meet with an insurance investigator regarding a boating accident that I witnessed 2+ years ago. I was hazy on the details of the accident, but as I though about it I could remember what lure (even the color), rod and reel I was using when it happened.

I'm a sick man... cool.gif

cjac -

Man isn't that the truth... I can remember fish I caught 20 years ago plain as day. But I've had to look at my driver's license to remember what my *own* b-day is before.

Word to the wise though. If the BOSS ever asks you why it is you can remember what you caught a 30 pounder on in 1996 but can't remember when her birthday is, be really, really careful how you answer... trust me on this one. shocked.gif

cheers,

Rob, the trick is to enter all important dates into the fishing journal, you're sure to read that!

Yes, I've learned some of the BOSS rules...........

Doing a little dance step when a package arrives at the front door with muskie stuff.........not good.

Running across the lot to the front door of the tackle store, leaving the BOSS behind......not good.

Admiring your new 8 foot cutsom rod and calling it "Beautiful"......not good.

Saying out loud that "I love showgirls and XXXs"..... not good. (Still trying to explain that it's a lure) confused.gif

That said, I'm out the door now to fish and will likely have another one to add to the list tomorrow!!
