Lower unit

hitthebricks

Question

I checked the lower unit gear lube on my 200 merc was leaking from the drain screws and had water in it because there was one bad washer and a extra one on top of a bad washer (from the shop that winterized it last year for me)I thought. So I replaced the washers and refilled the lower unit with fresh gear lube. I checked it after a week at Rainy Lk. and found the lube was milky again. I think seals need replacement, so to replace the seals on this, is this a job I could handle with decent mechanical ability or should I bring it in to a better shop than before? Does anyone have a good reliable shop to recomend in the North St. Paul area Thanks HTB

Just to let you know I don't do mine, I take them to a shop.

I have my OMC outdrive to be resealed before next use and I will have the pros doing it. They are not tough to do, I just don't feel comfortable doing it.

If your going to do it yourself you should buy a manual or go to your library and and take on out. Next step is to pressure test to find out whats leaking. When you find out where, you can determine if your up to that project. Some seals and o-rings are simple to replace, other aren't and only you know if your up to it.

I took my bro-in-laws advice and brought it to St. Croix Marine in hudson. They pressure tested it and found a wad of fireline from our trip to rainy, had worked its way under the propshaft seal and thats all it was. It would have cost me a lot more just replacing some parts that didn't need it. The in-law was right, they are honest, fair, and quick at St. Croix.
