Fireline

bhs91

Question

I have never used this before but bought some on sale today for my Father's day present:) What are the positives and drawbacks of this line. I would like to use it for everything since I have four rods and that is how I like to fish. Can I use it for lindy riggin', Jiggin' and cranks? How about bobber fishin' for walleyes on Mille lacs? Any info/insight would be great!!

Thanks,

BHS

I would also recommend using fireline for nearly everything. First, it is a no stretch line, that is why you do not have to set the hook as hard and you can set the drag a little lighter. The advantage of using fireline is that you can feel everything. I especially like it for lindy rigs because I can feel the smallest bites when using long snells on Mille Lacs over the flats. My second favorite use is cranking because you can feel everything on your line or your hook. You can tell if a week has followed your line down, its great stuff. I feel that there are certain drawbacks to fishing for bass with firline but for walleys it is awesome. I also like to use a small fluorolcarbon leader at the end of the fireline (usually p-line or vanish).

I use it for fishing in the weeds while bassfishing, for the extra toughness of being able to pull fish through the weeds. However, personally I have lost many fish that jump out of the water. The reason that this happens is because of the no stretch factor. A bass can create quite a pull when out of the water, and I have lost many fish because they actually tear their own mouths and the hook comes out. I prefer something with a little stretch in this siutuation such as a heavier monofilament (10-12lb berkley XT).

As far as bass fishing goes...If you are using a bait caster and lets say you try to cast farther than the abilities combined with the reel, rod, and operator. I have gotten Fireline and Powerpro to make it down to the spool with a back lash. For instance switching from a light worm to a double spinner without adjusting the magnets. blush.gif

They can be unforgiving at times. Other than that they are great! I switched back to mono I like the animated hook sets. wink.gif

Fireline is tough stuff. I had my weight for the lindy rig snagged in some rocks on mille lacs this weekend. The metal on the weight broke before the fireline did, two different times!

I love of for cranks, pulling bottom bouncers and Bobber fishing deep water. I don't use it lindy rigging as of this time. Great stuff along with power pro it's what I use.
