Ideas for cleaning oxidized vinyl siding?

Mark Christianson

Question

My house just turned 5 years old, and the vinyl siding is already looking faded/chalky.

Any ideas on an effective way to clean it up and get some color enhancement back in it?

Any home remedies/concoctions?

Anything a guy could mix up and run through a power washer?

I did a google search and didnt come up with a lot.

Mine is only 3 years old and looks the same as you described. Been wondering the same about cleaning. Mine gets baked in the sun all day on the back. I think it's faded and not dirty like you described, probably a lost cause, dang sun!

here is what i did with mine. went to home depot and got some house wash then spayed the siding fist with the presure washer then spayed the house wash on with the presure washer then took a brush and scrubed the siding then rinsed with presure washer. could of used just a bucket hose and brush but, got a new presure washer so i had to make use of it. got all the mildew off and made the siding look new again.

recently at Menards I saw a product made just for this purpose. A cleaner / color restorer for vinyl siding. I have not tried it, can't say how well it works. You can find it in the paint department. Good luck !

I used to own a company that hung that junk vinyl. You have a couple of options.

1 If it is only a couple years old, you can get ahold of the manufacture and try to get a fade claim. This is where they would replace all of the siding on your house, at no charge to you.

2 Another plan is to get one of those car wash systems that you hook up to a garden hose, and instead of putting car wash in it, you use armor all. That will get rid of that chalky look, but nothing can fix the fade besides replacement.
