Need some tips

Hey everyone, new here, but not new to fishing. I have been fishing since I was a wee little girl, and now that I have gotten more into this sport, im trying to broaden my horizons. Im a huge bass fisherman, and LOVE catching them, but now I want to venture off into the world of walleye and Northerns. Now, I have caught a few walleye and northerns while fishing on a river in Pillager, but since I was trying to go for bass, it wasnt long after catching a northern or walleye that it would snap the line. I was using crappie minnows. I would just like to know what kind of lures, and what depth is the best to catch these fish at, primarily in the evening time, around 6pm. I would be fishing on Nisswa area lakes, such as, Gull, Edward, Hubert, Clark, North Long.

By the way, I just bought a mimic minnow, and wow, that worked second cast out, unfortunatly the bass chowed the tail off and it doesnt mimic a minnow anymore haha. I usually use platics, mainly worms, and purple seems to work the best IMO, was wonderin if northerns and walleyes like to snap at those. Thanks for any tips

Welcome to FM and I am very sure that there are many people around here to help you get started fishing for Walleyes and Pike.

First thing is that there are serious differences in targeting the to species.

For northerns I would use a leader or superline such as Power Pro to prevent these break offs. Lures would be larger spinner baits, spoons, crankbaits, and live bait for these critters.

If you have specific questions about this type of stuff go down to the species forums and someone will be glad to help you. wink.gif

The best single lure you migth find to catch all species of fish, would probably be a crankbait\stickbait. If you get a few Rapala's (or similiar product), get one that runs shallow like a #13 floater, and also one that runs a little deeper like a #9 ShadRap. You also might find that a rattling-rapala might do the trick. This is just my opinion, but I think you'd have luck catching walleye, northern, and bass on the lures I've mentioned.

A mimic minnow would be a good option as well. Cast it out, and try some retrieves jigging it along the bottom. If that doesn't work, cast it out and only let it drop for a few seconds, and then start your retrieve. This should bring it through the middle of the water column where pike and bass frequent. Try all areas of the water column, and hopefully you'll find some fish that are willing to bite.

I would recommend a Rapala Husky Jerk. Pinch the barbs, through it out, crank a few times and let it pause. It is deadly in the evening for Walleye. The key is the pause and the depth. It also won't get chewed apart.

Good luck

Actually, most superlines have next to nothing when it comes to abrasion resistance. If something like Power Pro runs into anything sharp (ie a pike's teeth), you're going to lose the fish. Things like spinner baits and bucktails, steel leaders work fine. They don't work too well on cranks and jerks, so I generally just take my chances, but a heavy fluorocarbon leader would help out.

Welcome aboard! IMO, the best two lures you could spend your money on is a small package of 1/4oz jigs in chartruse and a #3 mepps spinner or Johnson silver minnow. The mepps spiiner will fool Northerns and Smallies into hitting it and it will even fool a few walleyes coming up shallow in the evening. The rest of the day the jigs will usually get them in deeper water. The Johnson silver or gold minnow works great for northerns especially since it weedleess.

There are too many presentations and too many lure types to narrow this down. Justlike Bass fishing, you gotta try a few things till you find what works well and your able to present well so that you become confident in its use. But thats what makes this soooooo much fun is the anticipation of each outing.

Good luck!
