Alex or Sham

Recommended Posts

We got a first timer on this site. I have been reading for a few days now. Just logged on. Alot of good sportsman on this site. Was wondering if you had to choose between Alex and Sham this weekend for Muskies what one would you choose. I have been chasing Muskies for 7 years but have only fished Alex and Sham about half a dozen times each. Still learning alot. I will be taking my dad out. I have had him out about ten times and he still hasn't snagged one. Looking for a fish. What does everyone think.

Thanks in advance! smile.gif

Alex is definitely the better choice if you are looking to find the "typical" musky habitat. By that I mean, mid-lake structure with rocks, weeds and the like. It is a more scenic lake and throws in several islands for good measure. You really couldn't go wrong with either, as you know already, both have extremely clear water, deep, flourishing weedbeds and respectable populations of muskies. I have personally fished Shamineau more so I have had better success there, but Alex provides a better mix of structure to fish.

Fishing report:

Fished Sat. for 9 hours. My dad had a low 40's hit around 9:00 a.m. but didn't get a good hook set, he lost it at the boat. Seen only one other fish (mid 40's). Was very windy and the water cooled down from the rain to 67 degrees. Everyone I talked with wasn't having any luck.

Guess that's why it's called fishing and not catching.

I had several sightings (either one skie several times or several skies...I couldn't tell!) from the end of the dock this weekend on Alex...morning, noon, and night. Couldn't get a bite. There's always next weekend.

So if it is going to be as warm as they say it is next weekend (maybe 20-30 degrees warmer), how does that change the muskies habits? I a newbie, and I'm curious to know if they'd be more or less active.

My brother and I were on Alex all weekend. Had about 10-12 follow ups, hooked into a mid 30's but lost it, all on Saturday. Fished until 4:30 on Sunday and only had one follow. That cold front must of really shut them down. One of the follows on Saturday was pushing 50". Very nice muskie!!!! laugh.gif

I dissagree I think the massive cold front helped me catch two fish this weekend a 43" and 27" . The muskies were way more active due to the water temp being lowered to a more comfortable 67 degrees as compared to 76 plus that it was last week. Even though muskies prefer warmer water than pike they are still a cold water fish. smirk.gif

Good Luck

Saturday was one of my best days on Alex for quite some time. First, had one miss my suick about a foot into the retrieve. I saw big mouth came out of the water, but missed the suick. A little later I missed a smaller one that smacked a depth raider on a figure eight. After me moved to get out of the wind, I had one blow up on my topwater 5 feet from the boat. Never seen him coming, scared the heck out of me! I set the hook way to soon and felt it on for just a second. Two casts later I hooked into a 41", I'm almost positive it wasn't the same fish.

This was all between about 9-10am, once the sun started to come out we didn't see another fish.

On Sunday my wife caught a 38", her third one this year already. Last year we caught 4 muskies all year, so far we have that in two weekends. Funny thing is we are fishing the same spots and using the same lures as last year. confused.gif

Hey Shamalex,

Nice avatar!!! Was your dog in my boat, or mine in yours!

I think your wife is in 1st place on the leader board! Congrats on a fun weekend. You haven't mentioned, what is she throwing?

It seems to me that the fish are a little more aggresive then last year at this time. If you guys can remember the water temps were not in the 70's tell early July!!! I think that is what is going on. Opening weekend I never had one lazy follow. Either they had their mouth wide open or went flying under the boat!!!! Not one turned on me.

I think shamalex is right about the weather. Early morning is good until the sun gets to high or peaks out of the cloads.

This year is going to be a good year for Alex!! Just dont tell anyone ok!!!

Brian
