early season questions

Recommended Posts

I just started fishing for Muskies last September. Used a topraider over shallow weeds almost exclusively and caught 3 and saw many more on about 6 outings. But I'm not sure what to try early season. Lures, depths, types of retrieves, types of stucture? Any tips would be greatly

appreciated!

topwater is not one of my favorite lures for early season. Some people swear by them, but they just don't seem to produce for me early.

My best luck has been on small bucktails. Mepps Musky Killers to be exact. Walleye fishermen say "match the hatch", well, I think that kind of works for muskies too. It really depends what the weather is like. The last few years it has been overcast and cold with rain parts of the day. It should be considerably warmer this year with much warmer water temps so topwater may be productive. Slow rolling spinnerbaits through the deep weed edge will probably produce. It is something I will be doing throughout the day on Saturday.

The basic rule I stick by until I can start to pattern fish early season is "SSS" Small, shallow and slow presentations. Once you start to spend some time on the water the fish will tell you what they want.
