Opener blunders

Where were you loading that had such horrid waves???

Also, why is the drain plug the problem? I always leave mine in and never take it out. I always use the bilge whenever I think the boat has collected some water from being in the rain or whatever.

The lake we were on only has a public access on the south shore, and the wind was directly out of the north. There are a couple of miles of lake from the south end to the north, so there was plenty of area for waves to pick up a head of steam. My boat came out fine. One giant wave put a bunch of water in the boat and sunk it a little, and made it easier for the next waves to get in.

A lot of people take the drain plug out for many reasons. Leave it in or take it out....it doesn't matter as long as you remember to check it before launching.

TSCTSC,

I have a 16.5ft open bow fiberglass Nordic that is my fish-N-ski boat. It doesn't have a bilge. So I HAVE to take the plug out and remember to put it back in. A lot of us don't have that bilge option. I have to leave the plug out while in the driveway as my cover is old enough now to let in some water. Time for a new one of those too. Only forgot to put the plug in once. It's a lesson you don't forget easily. All was well as I realized what was going on before we got away from the launch. Pulled the boat back out, drained it, put the plug in and were on our way.

I have a hole in my boat so water gets in and I use the bilge every 10 minutes or so to pump the water out...then when taking the boat out of the water, I take out my plug to drain the rest of the water out! grin.gif then put back the plug in next time I load in the water.

Hey Merc

If my guess is correct on the lake you were fishing, my Grandpa live just west of that access(and on the south side of the dirt road) and has a LOT of dump in his yard. You will know what I am talking about if my guess on the lake/access is correct. crazy.gif

If you get in a bind, just walk over and have him bring a tractor over to yank out the boat if it ever sinks. grin.gif

This didn't happen on opener, but the last week of april. I took the week off to do annual yardwork and lots of fishing. Monday morning rolls around, I head to Minnetonka to search for crappies. I tried a few spots. Nothing, so I decided to try a bay that was farther away. On the way there I saw a fishy looking spot and decided to take a few casts. Didn't get a bite. So I started up the motor and put in gear, and it didn't move at all. I lifted up the lower unit on my mid-eighties 35 horse Johnson. Prop missing! mad.gif It fell off! Luckily my trolling motor got me back to the landing an hour later. So I ordered a new prop from Crystal Pierz, and they said it would take a few days to get it, Well, there went my whole week, waiting to get the new prop. When I finally got it, it was the wrong prop! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif. I didn't want to deal with those guys any more, so I got a prop from a smaller shop by a guy who knows his props.

Why dun you just go and repair the hole???!!! Or is it some hole that you cannot find??

if you are talking to me.... The hole is about a size of a .25 cent/quarter. Will have to get inside and weld and then weld on the outside... Aluminum is not easy to weld like steel/metal. Fiberglass is another way to go but dont know if that will work great. Have to talk to someone who does that kind of welding. It has been like that for the last 2 years so its not too bad at all wink.gif. Have a great one.

How about something like JB Weld? I used it on an older 16' aluminum boat a few years ago where the transom and hull met and it worked well. Just a thought.

Hey BLB! If your Grandpa has an old half maroon Dodge pickup, then I know exactly where he lives. That pickup used to be my Dad's. Your Grandpa must live just before the big curve that goes up hill as you're going west on the dirt road. Am I correct?

LOL! Funny stuff. Your Grandpa was going to buy my Dad's old Dodge for parts. He determined that my Dad's truck was in better shape than his, so he decided to drive my Dad's around.

Did you grow up in Battle Lake? I grew up in Elbow Lake but stayed on the lake all summer starting in about '76. My folks actually bought the land in '73, but by the time we had a liveable structure it was a few years later. Have been there ever since. My folks now live there permanently.
