Merc spark plugs

I have a 2001 Merc 150 XR6. The plugs are $6.99 each. Does anyone know why? An Opti I can maybe see why but this is carbed. Is there an alternative plug? (cheaper) The Merc rep. at the Sports show told me that it was due to an upgraded computer. What?? Any advice/comments? Thanks.

You might want to check to see if Split Fire makes a replacement for that plug. But you'll drop from 6.99 to 3.99 ea. But it depends on the heat range and tread of the plug. I've had gread performance with Split Fire marine plung.
