Which Marine Band Radio?

Now that the Forum helped me buy Sonar/GPS I turn to getting a marine band radio for my soon to arrive boat. The last one I bought, 10 + years ago, was manual (no scan), not portable, not waterproof, used a tall mast (12 feet?).
I primarily use this on Lake Michigan or other large lakes, but other uses as well.
What do I need to know to zero in on the best units in 2004?

Look for one that has 1,000 of power or more. You will need that power in big open air waves.

None of them have 1,000 watts of power, you would key the thing up and cook your brain. I would guess they are all well under 30watts. It would be like a microwave.

I believe most radios that mount in a boat are 25watts and the hand helds are 5watts. But what is a good radio I can't help you with that.

I bought a uniden president last year and I really like it.It has all the features I need and is water proof and compact.It is 25 watt.Just do a search under marine radios and do some comparing.A good antenna is a must,stay away from the short whips.Handhelds might be convienient but have limited range.Hope this helps.
