Is it a tiller model or a remote ?
If a tiller, it is probably worn out gears, not much to adjust.
If it's a remote control, you can check with cables inside motor and/or inside remote control to see if you can get some adjustment.

yeah if its a tiller, the gears in the lower unit are shot, If it gets engaged into drive at higher than idle frequently the leading surface of the gear gets hammered and that can cause it to slip out of gear on you. A friend had a 150 Horse Evinrude that we replaced the lower unit on because the nimrod didnt know that slammin the gears at higher RPMs would hurt it. Not saying that is what you did, but years of wear can cause that also. My uncle who uses his boat 3 - 5 times a week, had his 82 Johnson 25Horse start jumpin out of gear. But in his case it is just extreme wear, we pulled it apart and the gearcase is just worn out, the compression is weak, alot of hours have been on that motor.
