Archerysniper and I made our second trip to South Dakota's Black Hills.  He again shot his bird the first morning there, we worked a little harder on mine. It was noon of the third day, we had just pulled a blind and were headed in for lunch when some yelping and a gobble came from a distant ridge. Lunch will have to wait.

We dropped everything except my gun and Jeremy's calls.  Down into the draw and up the other side and I see some birds at only about 60 yards.  Couldn't tell what they were.  I got set at the top of the ridge and Jeremy stayed down below me about 30-40 yards and did his magic on the calls and some leaf scratching.  After much gobbling at Jeremy's calls two jakes came in at just 10 yards, then this tom showed at about 25 yards and we were filled out.  It was 1:00 straight up.

I know Merriam's are generally not as big as our Easterns, but this was the smallest adult bird I'd ever shot.  Still I wouldn't have changed a thing.  These are just beautiful birds.  A great end to a great hunt.

Well, he didn’t make my original rough score number.  The bathroom scale weighed heavier than the fish scale and the fish scale was closer (but under) the certified scale at work.  So we’ll go with the fish scale.  Somehow this actually makes me feel better about the bathroom scale weighing heavy. 😁

I’ve never been a huge fan of those beards with that one long hair/feather until now. Longest beard I’ve ever gotten by .75 inch.

Man, I should have entered this thing.  My bird was 24 and 6 oz, 1 inch and 1/8 on both sides, with a 10.5 beard.  SW Missouri.  Biggest bird I have ever shot.

Yup!  Ya shoulda!  That is a high scoring bird - congrats!

I didn’t think I’d get a good scoring bird this season but entered at just about the last minute for the heck of it.

Beat my bird by a bit.  Nice Tom Bobby!

I got a turkey but I did not fill out the paperwork as I will be in last place or just a head of the tag soup guys. I got this jake today if he went 12 pounds I am only 200. His beard was 3 inches and spurs we 1/8 tops if you could count them at all. It was a great season as I enjoyed the other birds and wildlife and relaxing with all this other stuff going on. Here are my photos
