Mn. Opener Decoy Setup

Recommended Posts

Seeing whats working for everyone using decoys for mn. opener. My new whiteface DSD jake had 2 toms come in for my 10 year old grandson, Jeffrey. Whats working for everyone else? When using hen/jens only decoys, how do you set them and what do you use etc. Like upright and feeder???? Just seeing.

What would be the reasoning behind just using hen\ hens decoys? To put the toms at ease? I usually use the standard hen / jake combo.

I personally don't use hens often.  When I do she's in a breeding position near a strutting tom.  I usually go jakes of various postures or no decoys.  I like to keep them guessing where that hen is at.  I've had too many mature Tom's hang up, strut and gobble until the real hens show up to escort him away when using just hens.

    • I ordered a Somerset  grape vine last spring. Mainly because it is the only seedless grape that is supposed to be hardy enough to grow here. I took it off the wire and laid it down and covered it up with dirt to keep it from winter killing. It came through fine. Just put it back on the trellis yesterday.

    • I like to pick the smaller ones as they are not as woody.  I slice thin cuts off the outside edges and throw the center, batter and fry them.  Yuum! 😋
