I spent most of early ice pheasant hunting and not taking advantage of good ice and lake access. Then when we had great ice we got a ton of snow and wind and pretty much made any fishing impossible unless you had a sled or tracked vehicle. Definitely regret not getting out more during first ice. I was drilling a hole this winter and it went right up to the engine of the auger. It’s not that the ice was real thick. It was all the snow and slush A lot of slush and snow on the lakes this year Still ice covered in the Duluth area on Lake Superior but it’s turning dark. That’s where I will start my open water season before the regular fishing opener Edited March 27, 2019 by tacklejunkie

Wanderer
I skipped right over planning for the walleye opener and spent my efforts on my muskie gear. Plus fixed the cracked transom on the toon and ran a few trips up and down the river over Easter weekend. Then helped a buddy test out his new/used Lund 1875 Pro V GL on Gull the other night after work. THAT got the juices flowing! What a sweet rig. When we got to the landing I stood there a bit and let smell of the open water soak into my brain. It’s time.
tacklejunkie
The local lakes are open. I’ve been on Lake Superior a couple times as my appetizer for the opener and the fishing has been pretty good
