Big Buddy Heater Won't Light

Recommended Posts

I used this thing 4 times last season (brand new then), and now it won't light.  I've got spark, changed the LP tank, and nothing.  Anyone take one of these things apart to make it work again?

You said you changed the LP tank. Was it using a hose or a direct connect 1lb ? If it is a hose it can take a few minutes to get the gas into the heater. I like to heat the thermocouple up with the heater set on 3 to get the gas to move faster. Even that can take a while if you are using a 10' hose.

For a test light I would screw on a 1lber or 2 and see if it lights.  If it does then it's what Jim said above if it doesn't then it is the heater and may be dirty like others have said.

When I take out my big buddy heater for the first time of the year I use a lighter on the thermocouple and pilot to get the gas through the hose. This normally take a few minutes and then the pilot will light. After that it's good for the year. This is with a 20 pound tank and 6 foot hose.

I just use 1lb tanks.  I haven't been back home to try any of these tips yet.

You can purge the air out of the hose out on the lake, then it only takes a few seconds for the gas to get to the pilot.

Do the cleaning others have suggested. Just an FYI, this will be the 11th season I've used my Buddy heater with a 20# tank and I have never had an issue. I did have to clean it once when I had a weak pilot light. What I do to prevent problems is keep a small plastic bag over the end of the hose whenever it's not in use (the hose is kept attached to the heater) and when I put it away for the season, I put it in a big trash bag and seal the bag as tight as I can get it. It's a little bit of a PIA, but I'm convinced it's why I don't have the problems I see so many guys have every year. Hope this helps.

Do you have the filter on the end of the hose?

If your using the l lbs tanks and it's working then it not the heater but your dirty hose clogged up, not letting it purge long enough to get the air out or a bad tank valve. Are you using a brand new tank?  They may have not purged the air out before filling. Had that happen at a station up at LOW once. 12 mile trip back into town when I should have been fishing!! 😠

Yes, at the heater end of the hose. Change it every 2 to 3 seasons whether it needs it or not.

    • Great advice and sounds like you have had some great times on the great Upper Red Lake!  The difference on Red from having a good day to a great day can be as much as moving 20 feet away!  From what you explain I would try to befriend a local or rent an ice auger and bring with the cold gear.  Rent your house like you are and then throw the auger in the car and explore or just pop holes in the area of your house so you can get out enjoy the uniqueness of fishing outside and your chances for landing more fish increases greatly opposed to hard house fishing.  Good Luck!!
    • I have been here a good 17 years and I think there is only about 1 guy left here that I have met in person. Back in the day I knew and met several members who were frequent posters on FM. I met quite a few of them through the BP Catfish League but I think most of those guys are long gone.
    • Ok getting things back on track.  Next month will be my 14th year and I think I've only met one other member.  Met Frank (Surface Tension) several years back on Fish Lake near Duluth.  He was incredibly helpful and generous sharing his knowledge of the lake.  If I remember right my dad and I drove up and Frank called saying the forecast looked like rain for the entire day.  Well my dad and I were already on the way and were going to fish rain or shine so Frank and his son still geared up and met us for some fishing.  I don't remember exactly how the day broke down but I remember get really wet but also catching a lot of nice fish.  I've fished the lake a lot since but that was my best day by a long shot.
    • I am making Christmas jerky packs for gifts by request   so where do I send my request??!!!  enjoy them good eats!!!
    • Thanks Frank. Your another member I have met about 5 times sledding, Twig swap, old Bside Bash and never got in front of the camera?  🙂   Lets get this thread back on track about meeting folks on this site for Outdoor activities and stop giggling about a guys titties! 🙄
    • Don't let him fool ya, he used to be known as LMIT OUT. 😁
    • Here you go just for you! I don't hunt that spot anymore anyway. Best time to be in that stand is in the evening!  😉   N 47.048424 W 94.735163
