Day one is in the books.  How'd everyone do?

My young dog really stepped up today, pretty excited about that.  And the old girl is a true veteran that makes it to easy on me

Pretty poor for us in the Worthington area.  Six guys shot one rooster and missed one. Way too many crops in the fields yet to get too serious yet.Nice pic and good looking pups.

Season is young yet fellas, hopefully it stays dry for a while, we ran into lots of water and crops as well. The kid dropped the only rooster we saw on Saturday , lots of hens though. The neighbor out that away saw a small brood of chicks 2 weeks ago, real late hatch but hopefully they came out ok in the rain last week.

The birds are really showing themselves as the harvest wids down and the snow flies.

We popped up probably 60 birds yesterday compared to a total of less than 10 for the year before yesterday.

Not at all. They were bunched up in thickets. The first group was a dozen right at shooting time. The second and third were groups over 20 and then a ditch with a strip of corn next to it had another 10 or so.

After a good early snow like yesterday you just need to know what cover to look for.

some good areas to hunt down there for sure.. I was raised out by Minneopa Golf course..

It's not as good as it once was and this year has been challenging to say the least.

But when it was good there was an orange army in the area but for several years you don't see metro hunters coming into the area because it takes work to fill out most days. Yesterday was an anomaly but it was nice to see some numbers.

It's definitely picked up down here in the Worthington area as well. Almost all the corn is out and that has made a huge difference in the number of birds being seen. Best time of the season coming up with roosters in the cattails.

Yeah, it’s getting better with the corn but in the southern part it is so wet it’s hard to find dry ground. It had gotten better since everything froze and we got the snow but yesterday’s rain and warm weather pretty much stopped the season around here until it freezes again

The storm last weekend  has moved the birds into the heavy duty winter cover. We had pretty good hunting in the cattails the last couple of days. Perfect weather helped.

Now that the corn is out and the ground is white the birds are really showing themselves. Three times in the last month I have seen 50-60  birds on a short day. Nearly every one was in a group and they are concentrating in dense thickets of plum brush.

And there are literally next to no hunters out and about going after them which is a big change from even a decade ago

On Sunday after the snow I went coyote hunting and the pheasants were out in force and grouped in the brush and thickets. I ended up just taking the dogs out for a little recreational training and I'm pretty sure we saw over 200 birds. I honestly don't think I have ever had a single day in Minnesota where we flushed more birds than Sunday. With a good spring next year could be one of the best years ever in my lifetime in this area.

    • After starting out the winter with a lack of snow February is making up for it. Earlier in the week the southern half of the state received 4 to 6 inches of snow and in the last couple of days the north and northwest received from 4 to 8 inches of snow.Snowmobile trails are now open in most, but not all, counties across the state with conditions rated as good or excellent in many counties on the Wisconsin Department of Tourism's Snow Conditions Report (exit DNR). Many state properties were regrooming cross-country ski trails and ski trail conditions ranged from good to excellent. Some freezing rain fell in the south after the snow, resulting in some icy conditions in some locations. Temperatures are expected to warm this weekend, especially in the south where more rain is also in the forecast, while the north is expected to get more snow. With all the recent snow, conditions should be excellent for the American Birkebeiner Ski Race this weekend in the Hayward-Cable area. It is the largest ski race in North America and attracts thousands of skiers from all over the country and world -- skiers from 49 states and 36 countries participated in 2018 -- and draws tens of thousands of spectators to the area. .
    • I doubt it but you can call the DNR and ask. You can pull up the regs on a smart phone anyway.
    • ......The 6 packages from the first round are long-gone, so I am brining up another batch. Ended up buying an entire case of butts (@ $1.18 per #) from Sams. I am going to do 3 butts - one with High Mtn buckboard seasoning and two with another dry brine consisting of Tenderquick, brown sugar, garlic salt, and black pepper. I always like getting to the raw ingredients of spices versus relying on someones "magic rub". If it goes badly I will revert back to the HM cure. As an added note, I also picked up a $20 loin that I put HM cure on to experiment with some Canadian bacon.... Will check back in 10 days or so!
    • if thats the case i hope there printing water proof versions!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant keep mine nice and tidy in the cab of my truck!!!!!!!
    • Have not heard this. Why just a boat? It needs to be in some peoples buckets to so when their 500 fish over their limit they can't say I no know, I no know? 🤷‍♂️
    • Got mine yesterday during the snow.  I was informed that there is a new rule requiring the MN Fishing Regulations be carried on your boat and that this new rule is not documented in the Regs.  Anyone know if this is fact or just a kindly recommendation?
    • Mike is as good as it gets, especially if you're talking archery.

    • Coyle for Donato and a 5th, not as bad as nino for rask because at least donato has some potential to be a better goal scorer but overall yikes, not thrilled with Fentons bigger trades so far, the smaller ones have been good but that is the problem. Either way all signs point toward a rebuild of some kind.
    • It's a prairie zone.  We're right on the northern edge of the hills, Just north of I90 near Sturgis.
