Popular Post ANYFISH2
Once again, this morning started off by waking up the boy and trying to get him out. Unfortunately, it was a no go. I gathered up my bow and started on my way about 4:45. I have good walk to get to the blind I set up yesterday afternoon. I set up here, after hearing the birds hanging in this area for first few hours each day last weekend. I was a bit hesitant because this area is deep woods, and brushy. Alright with the shotgun, but being new to bow hunting turkeys, I was worried birds my hang up in range with too many obstacles. I arrived at the blind before 5:30, a bit late as it was getting light fast. I get "jenny" (Avian X up right hen) set up and settle into the blind. Not long after A gobbler starts his morning song. He seems to be the only one around. No other distant gobbles, strange as there has been good numbers on the property this spring. Flydown comes, he gobbles a couple of times and is joined by another that never made a peep on roost. That bird gobbles 3 times. The woods fall silent, for hours! I mean not a single gobble or a hen purr. The sit in the blind, with nothing to listen to, became a bit chilly for while. I then decided it was time to check in here and see how you all were doing. Fortunately Wanderer had posted that his morning was going much like mine. After a post or part of two, I here a distant gobble. He us across a large swamp to the east. I dont bother to call, he is far, and I have never drawn a bird across that thing! I start to post I heard a gobble, and he gets fired up and is closing the distance fast! Before I change my words I have 4 hens come running by my blind. No Tom?? I then decide to give a soft call, he cuts me off, he is close and just lagging behind. I peek through a flap on the blind, there he is, not 20 yds away! He seems to hangup there for a couple of minutes, strutting and gobbling like crazy. It sure is loud in the blind! Finally, he breaks strut and make a direct line to "jenny". With the windows closed, the sun level was perfect to give his location up as he walked closer. I draw as I see his shadow enter my shooting picture. Seconds later, he steps into view strutting. Now things are a little blurry here, as my mind is racing, anchor point, find pin(blurry and not collecting much light), follow legs up, level with beard, ect... He stops perfect, I squeeze the release and hear the arrow make contact, with something. He takes off running, than slows to walk as he enters some thick brush, I can't see him any longer. Thinking I may have missed again, I open the blind, knock another arrow, and walk towards where I had last seen him. I find a half dozen cut off wing feathers at the spot he stood, look over about 40 yds and see him give his last kicks! The excitement was overwhelming, I had be reluctant to hunt with a bow up until this year. And struggled to figure out blind placement on a deep woods property. As well as missing my first opportunity. This bird, this hunt was just a little more special! Spurs: 1 1/16" and 1 1/8" Beard: 10 7/8" Weight: 24.64(10oz)lbs DrJ, leech~~, IceHawk and 6 others
ZachD
Nice bird! Well I had one that gobbled at my call I sat tight and waited for him to come to me Then I look in the field on the other side of the tree line and there he was strutting away straight across from me. Gave him another call and he disappeared from view was hoping he would had over my way but never saw him again. I then had to leave because the wind was trying to blow me away. I passed on hunting today to do spring things around the house (get the boat out, lawnmower, take down Christmas lights, and clean the garage.) I am giving it another go tomorrow morning. Man this turkey is just giving me the slip every time. I am starting to get a vendetta against him. The neighbor called me and said that he was at his other property about 30 mins west of the land I am hunting now and said he saw 4 toms and 3 hens in the field. I sent my uncle out there tonight he didn't see any he is hunting it in the morning if he has success I will be trying it mid week as well. ZachD
All set up ready to rock its going to be a beautiful day out regardless!
Borch
Birds were rocking on the roost this morning and once they flew down it quieted down quite a bit. Then I had a coyote barking and howling behind me about 150 yards for 20 minutes straight. Not a gobble since although a heard a hen clucking a little bit ago. At least I know there are a bunch of birds around. It's been a quiet season so far with lots of Jake's, hens and several toms that just didn't pan out. But that's turkey hunting. Wanderer
I think the yotes are having a huge impact on the birds I’m hunting too. They stay on the move here it seems and stay quiet. I couldn’t swing the Tom in that passed by this morning. He knew where he wanted to be and where I am wasn’t it!
DonBo
Congrats on that first archery bird Anyfish! I love my guns but when it all comes together and you're able to take one with the bow, well there's not much more exciting than that. ZachD
Well they were gobbling up a storm on the roost then all went calm then around 800 I heard one gobble then they went to the neighbors field corner on the other side of the treeline! So I had to watch them strut around for an hour I decided to try to sneak through the swamp and go over the bridge to the field by the time I made it there they were not in the corner anymore but 60-70 yards further down tried calling from there but no luck that's twice I have seen them in the corner at 820 each day sucks because I was going to set up there but I was thinking that will be the day that I am sitting there and they come down to where I was! Next time I am out I am sitting in the corner putting a stutter out and not calling
DonBo
Anyfish, two questions. Just curious what broadhead you were using, and when are you going to get Isaac a bird?
ANYFISH2
I use rage two blade, same as I use for deer. I will get Isaac out as soon and often as he will allow. I had thought he would be out 5 -6 times by now. He is struggling to give up his play time without snow on the ground. Hanging with the neighbor boy fishing for creek chubs in the flooded pond has been too much to avoid. Funny he asked to go out in the morning during the week! I think, he thinks, he wouldnt have to go to school! Silly boy. DonBo
