Slush and water on ice.

Recommended Posts

Coming to a lake near year! :(

Please give some reports of what you are finding as we start the melt down. If you don't want to say the lake just say "Up-By or Near XYZ, MN" to give others an idea of what they may be heading into.  Thanks.

I was on a sled but there were guys blasting across the lake in trucks. As deep and heavy as the snow was and the ruts they were leaving it's amazing no one got stuck! I tried 6 spots from 6' to 72' feet.  Just small Perch and a few blips on the Vex. Ice was a good 1 3/4 to 2 feet thick yet.  I may be done on that lake for a while. :tired:

went out in the Bay lake area north of Mille Lacs...on the little lake we fished every step we sank a foot and each step filled in with water!  It was a mess but we drove 1.5 hrs to get there so we stuck around for a few hours and caught a few crappies over a deep hole.  Nothing big...good to get out but was very sloppy

Shoot. My family's cabin in near Bay Lake and I was hoping it was freezing up a little more up there so I could sneak out for one last trip. But sitting in 6 inches of slush doesn't sound like much fun.

Fished a couple lakes in the Prior Lake area on Friday and Saturday. Slush had firmed back up, but anywhere there were ruts from trucks driving through the slush were filled with water and looked to be a sure fire way to get good and stuck. Hoping with it staying below freezing for lows might be able to sneak tge house out one more weekend!

Found about 14" of snow and slush on Big Swan north of Grey Eagle. Spent about 1-1/2 hours trying to get my ATV out of that mess. Of course, it wouldn't have taken so long if my noodle was working well enough that I went home after the first time but I was too stupid and had to try a different route and get stuck a second time. :P

Got out of there and neighboring Long Lake was okay. I also notced Lady Lake had vehicles on it.

saw a guy on Mille Lacs as we drove by on our way home bury his ATV out from the Garrison Mcd's...looked like he was in a deep field of snow and slush.  Glad I was not in his position at that time!!

    • Yeah, the last couple of weeks have been pretty uneventful at my feeders. Then all of sudden today I was bombarded with multiple species!    I had 2 hen pheasants pecking around, then later the rooster showed up. There were robins everywhere. The blue jays are back to eating up the peanuts within minutes of me putting them out. I’ve actually been saving money the last couple weeks on sunflower chips, because the goldfinches disappeared. But today I had redpolls out there for the first time of the season. So I’ll have to start working some overtime to afford the food they go through! Have a lot more woodpeckers this winter than last year as well.
    • 🤣 man leech go chase some cottontails.   Man that was funny!
    • Yep mine are back as well other then the Cardinals and Blue Jay's yet.
    • Hawg go to this site. It will help you id them.  https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/
    • It looks like you were using my cell phone to take those pics. I'm also surprised an old guy like you could stay up that late! Just kidding!
    • Thank you, looks like I have a ton of them and not the goldies, I'm kind of disappointed. There's quite a bit of difference, I must have been fooled by the yellow on the siskins. It's been a while since I had either. I'm still looking for my bird books to identify the others. It seems the older I get the better I get at hiding stuff from myself! Thanks again, Mark
    • not my pic but here is a winter goldie. pretty drab
    • pine siskins. look a lot like winter goldies just smaller
    • Eyeguy, do you have a picture of a winter goldfinch and a pine siskin? I'm not 100% sure I know the difference. Any idea what the birds are I posted about with the colored backs? Those are on the safflower seed heavy, not on the niger at all. I wish I had a lens to take a picture to show you.
