Ion Quick Release

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used the Ion ice Auger quick release?  Is it easy to change between an 8" and 10" augers?  When drilling a hole does it feel solid or does it have a little shake to it?   What are your thoughts on it?

Very solid and makes it really easy to change over.  I have one for my 8", 10", and my extension.  I wouldn't switch hole sizes if I didn't have them.

I have one as well for my 8" to 10" augers.   I did run into one issue and I'm not sure why it happened but when lifting it out of the hole (after running in reverse to get ice down hole) the auger came loose and went down the hole.   The quick release was slightly bent open so not sure why or how it happened.  I called ION and they sent me a new one and wanted my old one in return for evaluation.   So always may sure that it is fully locked before drilling.  I was able to retrieve my auger as I was only is about 12' of water and was able to have someone else drill several holes and I was able to hook it with a daredevil and pull it back up.

Not an ion but my buddy had a similar problem with his quick release on a strikemaster

The auger falling down the hole is the very first thing I thought of when I read the thread title. I don't think I'd want a quick release on an auger but then again I don't know much about them either.

As long as you see that it's latched every time you put it on I don't see how it could come off.  I haven't had an issue myself.  It latches quickly and is very obvious if it's latched or not.

The convenience the quick attach adds makes it a no-brainer for me.  I take the auger off the power head when I'm not using it.  They take up a lot less space in the wheelhouse when they are separate.

It's pretty slick if you're tight on space either in your vehicle or when dragging out a sled.

And the auger going down the hole is a result of OE.

    • A 12v camera with light available from Tomtop out of China $70 with 65 ft cable on reel. Its color HD resolution 1000tvl better than 720p used by Marcum & Aquavu HD units. (Except latest Marcum 1020p latest camera $650). Only drawback, it takes 20 to 30 days and $6 shiping. Link to Tomtop camera. They off a lot of camera options so you may want to da a bit of searching. https://m.tomtop.com/p-y3578-15.html?currency=USD&Warehouse=CN&aid=gplausyly&mid=10000018477&utm_source=SEM&utm_medium=Google Adwords&utm_campaign=TT_PLA_YLY&utm_content=2945&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxs3gBRDGARIsAO4tqq3wBcNnVRFIUf2QknDLs18FF6NrhJ9raJW9BAdaowvDD1gw08q_abwaAilBEALw_wcB Pic simple wire diagram. And how to configure cable on camera  to get Horz. view

    • Great advice and sounds like you have had some great times on the great Upper Red Lake!  The difference on Red from having a good day to a great day can be as much as moving 20 feet away!  From what you explain I would try to befriend a local or rent an ice auger and bring with the cold gear.  Rent your house like you are and then throw the auger in the car and explore or just pop holes in the area of your house so you can get out enjoy the uniqueness of fishing outside and your chances for landing more fish increases greatly opposed to hard house fishing.  Good Luck!!
    • I have been here a good 17 years and I think there is only about 1 guy left here that I have met in person. Back in the day I knew and met several members who were frequent posters on FM. I met quite a few of them through the BP Catfish League but I think most of those guys are long gone.
