They are starting to groom from Finland north on the NSST ,,, We could use more then the dustings of snow we have been getting lately to get the southern part of the trail set up

I have the day after New Years Tuesday Jan 2nd  off of work.

What do you guys think for a ride on that day?  :)

May have to trailer up to Finland and take off out of the 4 Seasons bar?

Well you have my email address.

The sled forum and you guys that I have met and ridden with in the past years is one of the only reasons I hang in here as well. I know we can always pick up a ride over on the other sled site but it seems like most of those guy want to ride point A to B at 80 mph all the time. I actually like to stop and talk, explore the area and see the scenery once in a while when I drive 150 miles up to the North Shore to ride.

Keep in touch with Walleyehooker and I so we can tag along on a ride or two with ya! ;)

I got rid of my last sled about 16 years ago but if I still had one, this would be a trail I would like to ride. I keep saying I'm going to take my 4-wheeler up to that area and ride but it never seems to happen. :(

Only  a small portion of the NSST is open to 4 wheelers

Yeah, I don't know what is exactly the NSST but I know there are 4 wheeler trails in the area that I want to check out. I didn't realize there were ATV trails up there until we were camping in Two Harbors this fall and we talked to some fellow campers who brought wheelers and were riding trails in the area.

I have heard of people doing Resort to resort or motel to motel rides along the North shore on wheelers in the summer or fall but not sure which stretch they run to do it?

Hey LoonASea and Walleyehooker what do you guys think about a ride on Tue Jan 2nd which it will still be a bit below zero or Sat Jan 6th when it is suppose to warm back up in the upper teens or 20's above Two Harbors?

Let me know what you think?  :)

Yeah this riding season is suking big time. Rode around ice fishing a bit last Sunday. Looks like the following weekend of the 20th is another warming trend coming.

Not sure where that other retired guy Walleyehunter is?  Must have took for the sun somewhere?

I see the 20th is the HCS ride on the northshore. May be I'll have to come up and ride tail end sweeper, sweeper behind you!

    • Hawg go to this site. It will help you id them.  https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/
    • It looks like you were using my cell phone to take those pics. I'm also surprised an old guy like you could stay up that late! Just kidding!
    • Thank you, looks like I have a ton of them and not the goldies, I'm kind of disappointed. There's quite a bit of difference, I must have been fooled by the yellow on the siskins. It's been a while since I had either. I'm still looking for my bird books to identify the others. It seems the older I get the better I get at hiding stuff from myself! Thanks again, Mark
    • not my pic but here is a winter goldie. pretty drab
    • pine siskins. look a lot like winter goldies just smaller
    • Eyeguy, do you have a picture of a winter goldfinch and a pine siskin? I'm not 100% sure I know the difference. Any idea what the birds are I posted about with the colored backs? Those are on the safflower seed heavy, not on the niger at all. I wish I had a lens to take a picture to show you.
    • lots of pine siskins have been moving thru here.
    • 1.21.19 Sunset Lodge Fishing Report, NW Angle of LOW,

      Hello from the NW Angle!

We are making ice up here at Sunset Lodge and with fresh snow coming the trails should be in great shape.

In Minnesota, we are seeing really nice saugers mixed in with walleye in 26-29ft. Rippin raps and rattle baits are calling fish to the house during slower portions of the day. Pink and white remains the favored color combo. Work these baits aggresively as they will attract fish, mellow out as fish appear on electronics, then finesse them with a more subtle presentation to seal the deal.

Crappies continue to come in from Canada. Electronics are key with a small presentation such as a tungsten jig with a small piece of minnow. Walleye action is hot off points and reefs on flats between 24-28 ft.

      Until next week!
      Sunset Lodge
    • I've seen a huge uptick in birds around my place as well.  I have let the feeder go empty now because the deer get to them before the birds do but still lots of birds in the yard.
