Kabetogama Ice Fishing--Questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, looking at an ice fishing trip to Kabetogama.  We have never fished there, summer or winter.  What do I need to know about it?  We are hoping to find some walleye and crappies.  I've heard the lost bay-Eks bay area is decent for crappie.

Any current ice reports?

Great to hear.  Fishing Report. http://www.kabfishingreport.com/

Also you want to bring a snowmobile to get to the better parts of the lake.  Big Lake.  The Park should be plowing a road some point this winter.  It goes from the Kab visitors center to the Ash river visitors center.  There are a lot of places to fish off the road once it gets opened up.   Here is the link to the VNP updates. https://www.nps.gov/voya/planyourvisit/winter-ice-and-trail-conditions.htm

If you never been to the lake before you could get a guide to get on fish.  Just to go and find fish can be tough.  Guide List. http://kabetogama.com/fishing/fishing-guides/

Places to stay I would also look on the web site http://kabetogama.com/resortsbusiness/resorts/.  You can also look at resorts on the Ash River.   Not sure which end of the lake you are looking at staying.   Cant recall witch resorts are open in the winter.   (ash trail lodge, Kecs Kove, Sandy Point)  This is a web site next to the Kab visitors center. http://pineairewebcam.dyndns.org/top.htm

Another note Walleye has a slot  size.  Some times it is very hard to get them in the slot.  There can be good perch fishing at times also.

Thanks!  We are probably just going to bring a wheelhouse up and either park it on shore or just off the access at the ash river visitors center.  Fish off snowmobiles and portables.  It is a big lake and will be a challenge, but if it works out it will be a great option if we don't want to go to LOTW or Red.

    • I never said that at all but my choice of "grill" or "smoker seems to bother you for some reason.   It's OK if you are a little bit jealous of my pellet smoker.....
    • How does the cold smoke accessory work? I wouldn't fathom doing any this time of year or does it have a built in ice tray to keep foods cool?. If not any grill or smoker would do the trick in the cold. I'm with others,  having room to hang for long smokes works the best. It is a nice concept though.
    • The fatty was good! Got up at 6:30 am Friday morning to put it on the pellet grill.
    • Ants are just trying to make a livin.
    • Buy an ant moat. Feeder hangs underneath it. Ants can’t cross the water. While I have never used this, I used to put my cup of grape jelly on a small plate, filled with water. Never had a problem with ants. So, in theory, the moat should work just the same.
    • I grease the pole with Mentholatum
    • Gotta love wings!! Had to see what this reverse searing is about. Pork chops off to the side grabbing natural hardwood smoke then over the heat... tasty.
    • Did a bunch of wings in the steam pot for 15 minutes yesterday. Let them cool and then brushed with oil and rub. Left uncovered overnight in the fridge. Tonight I grilled them indirectly over some charcoal and apple pellets in the smoker tube. Finished them off over the coals to get them crispy:
    • I'd just take a $20 loss and use the proper stuff your outboard is specified for.    It's just not worth it.   I feel like this falls into one of those "if you have to ask the answer is no" sort of things.
    • I have a half gallon of arctic cat APV oil, and was woundering if this can be used in my oil injected 2 stroke Yamaha 200HPDI? I bought a new sled this winter that requires C-TECH2 oil, so I have a half gallon of 45$ oil just sitting in my garage.
