Grayfox
Here,s #4,5 and 6 from the December moon. 4 came from a new property that butts up to some really thick brush and swamp. I set up on the West side of the farm, looking SW with a SE wind. The swamp was to my SW with the thick stuff to the south. I started with some light distress and waited 10 minutes, then went with a lone howl. I immediately got a response from an old male. I sat there for a minute and then answered it with another howl then sat quietly watching to the South. 15 minutes later I see it slowly working his way West along the edge of the field. There was no way for him to catch my scent so I waited for him to close the gap to 100 yards before I pulled the trigger. I'm not sure what I did but had to put a finishing shot in him after he made a short dash to the creek bottom. Big male. Two nights later I headed to a spot where Mitch and I had doubled the year before. I was sitting on the SE corner of the picked bean field with a NW wind in my face. I had put the caller out to the NW about 70 yards. I called on and off for almost an hour without any response and was about to wrap it up when I see one cutting across the field from West to East about 160 yards out. Again, it had no way of catching my scent so I just let it walk. It seemed to be getting a little buggered at about 110 so I settled the sights and sent one her way. Hit that one but she made a 60 yard run to the NW and tipped over. I kept the caller going and I see another one way out there, running straight away and almost to the property line 1/4 mile away. I barked it to a stop, cranked up the scope and put the crosshairs just below the top of its back and squeezed the trigger. I never saw it run but couldn't see it down so I thought I must have missed it and it jumped into the tree line. I drove out and grabbed the first one and headed out to check for the second. Founded it dead right where I shot. Never took a step at what Im guessing was around 350 yards. Longest shot so far this year and 5 and 6 were down.
