Huskie
I have a number of ash trees on my property that have some larger overgrown branches that I would like to cut off. All i hear is that the fall is the worst time to trim. What is the major concern if I do? How about if I spray the wound? I'm in southern Mn, corn country on I90 between Fairmont and Worthington, no ash borer problems here that I know of.
jentz
Many insects and fungi can and will lay eggs or spores in fresh tree wounds. At least wait till the leaves fall there should be few if any insects/fungus es after a couple good frosts. Tom Sawyer
Never ran into any problems trimming anything, either in spring or fall, other than Oak. Prune Oak in November, or during winter. I think fall is better with pruning trees, since the sap is going to the roots rather than the branches. Although any month with a "r", your fine to prune away. Powerstroke
Ash are perfectly safe to prune year round. No worries at all. Species to worry about in warm weather are Oak, Elm and some fruit trees. Ive been a professional tree trimmer for more than a decade. You'll be fine. There is nothing wrong with pruning in the fall, for just about any tree. In fact its a good time to prune for the most part. No need to treat wounds or anything. MNHunter65
How about Maples? I have a giant one next to the house that needs to be pruned.
Powerstroke
Maples are also totally safe to prune year round. Everyone always gets in a bunch about maples and their sap, but it is no problem. Sap is not blood and trees don't die from a pruning.Maples and ashes are completely safe to prune year round. Its a few of the trees that tree companies will absolutely be able to trim no matter what time of year.
