majors and minors

Recommended Posts

I assume you're talking about the lunar charts? The charts will show the moon fazes and when the best/ better fishing times will be. They are shown as a major, ( the best time to fish) a minor, ( a good time to fish), or when fishing could be slow. Many fisherman watch these closely to hit the best chances to catch a big one. Many guys will watch the barometer also as this can turn the bite on.

Minor is when the moon is rising or setting. Major is when the moon is directly over head or under foot. Fish activity increases during these times.

There are several schools of thought on this, the above being one such theory, as found on such sites as Solunarforecast. The original most well known theory was posed by James Alden Knight. I believe their theory was not the same times each day for majors and minors (as relates to moon overhead/underfoot and moon rise/set), but rather varies daily based on the relationships between moon, sun, and tides. They (his widow I think) print a book every year for the different daily occurrences. I've had anecdotal experience that supports both theories, but have also had all the stars line up and had squat for action. I think the main takeaway is fish as much as you can, but if you need to be choosy you may want to select those times that would appear to give you an advantage. And don't be running around the lake during one of those times whichever you believe, but be on a good known spot or where you've seen a big fish.
