Wrist problems?

Do any of you guys have wrist problems while fishing? Last year I really started noticing major pains in my wrists while fishing a jerkbait and a deep diving crank. If some of you guys do have pain what do you guys use to help out. Does anyone use a wrist brace? I might have to try one out.

I have had sore wrists while throwing both you mentioned, frequent breaks seem to help. IE throw something else for a bit.. I think its more of a fatigue issue, at least it is for me, though you could be getting a pinch or something? Now, tennis elbow I have had too, that for me was more painful. that I did wear a brace for..

Probably 10 years ago I saw a show with KVD showing how he fishes jerkbaits. The one thing he said that helps his wrists from fatigue and pain was to hold the rod on the underside of the foregrip with the rod handle rested against the forearm, and use your elbows instead of your wrists to snap the rod. I've been doing it ever since and it has helped considerably. I also hold the same way at times when fishing crankbaits as it allows the whole arm to support the rod rather than your wrist. It does take some getting used to though.

>And now I just searched for a video of KVD demonstrating his technique and he is using his wrists like normal.... *shrug* maybe it was someone else...

12 oz. wrist curls grin

Actually I agree with this. It's just like getting ready for sledding each year and holding the throttle down all weekend or shooting the Bow. Get out the hand press and start working it ahead of time!

The few times that I have gone in for therapy for something sore, it was Ibuprofen and work the area more to build it up! shocked

Here I was thinking maybe she would give me a nice rub down! grin

Yep, good old fishing injuries. If you are looking to strengthen your wrists try the old stick and string with a can of corn. Tape the string to the middle of the stick(broom handle) and the can of corn, use about a 36" piece of string and slowly roll the string up until the can reaches the broomstick and then slowly roll it back down again. Reverse wrist curls with a bike inner tube or theraband can also work well and you can do the exercise while sitting on the couch.

If they're even suspecting Carpal Tunnel, get it done. 30 minute procedure and you are fishing the next week. The only downside is that BIG needle they stick in your bicep and run electricity through it. Don't go in for it if you are in possession of State secrets. They'll be out quicker than mammarys from a prom dress.

That's funny, before you posted your edit, I went and watched the St. Lawrence Elite series event from last summer cuz I knew KVD had a Jerkbait catch out there on film.... defintately uses some wrist action and not how you described . His form is as good as it gets though. Christie is also amazing with a JB. Watched Timmy Horton work a JB once and his mechanics looked painful as hell!

BF24, I know you use a spinning combo for your JB's... do you reel with your right or left? I reel with opposite hands for casting a spinning, so when I need a break I switch from casting to spinning.

I do use a spinning and reel with my right hand. Maybe I should have one tied on a spinning end casting setup

Might not help you that much since you're moving the rod with the same wrist.

I've found the downward jerk (like Christie and KVD use) is easier on my wrists than the sideways jerk.

Not sure why your wrists are fatiguing with a deep diver though?

Equipment can lead to pain when fishing deep diving cranks.

Low gear ratio reels and long 7'6" or better moderate action rods make deep cranking so much easier.

I can throw a DT20 for a long time without fatigue using the right equipment.
