Auger recoil spring question

DrJuice1980

Question

So I broke the pull start rope, got everything disessembled, was putting it back on and the spring shot out. I've been battling with this thing for over an hour, my hands are starting to fatigue. There's hot to be an easier way. I've looked up ways, people say twisty ties, tried and failed. I used the rope housing to try to wined it up, failed. What am I doing wrong, is there am easy way?

Any help/tips would be appreciated.

Thank you

Winding a recoil spring is just short of witchcraft. I have seen many skilled mechanics struggle doing it. The guys that can do it make it look easy. I have struggled before on a recoil and ended up getting it but not after many failed attempts. The worst is when you get it back together and then find out that you didn't wind the spring tight enough and a few inches of rope sticks out.

Done! Going fishing. What a pain. Got it on the first try today, only to find out it was on the wrong way. Got it on the second time, then in trying to line up the spring I clipped through it and has to bend a new "catch" in it. Third time right on, 3 for 3 after about 20+ failed attempts yesterday. Success, let's hope so...

Oh this brought back some bad memories from last year. Same thing happened to me at 7AM on the lake. After going home and giving it a couple shots by hand we tried a bunch of ridiculous methods (cardboard tubing crazy) on the insistence of my dad. Finally, we tried by hand again and got it after about the 10th try. It was a 4 hour ordeal, but ended with us finally getting out (again). We even ended up catching a few decent fish that day. grin
