Sump pump problem

Hester

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, my sump pump is now running cause of all the melting going on. After the water pumps out, the pump turns off but bounces and makes a hammering or pounding sound for about 10 seconds . Could it be a bad check valve or some kind of pressure problem? It is actually kind of loud and is diving my wife nuts which is driving me nuts.

The pump shuts off and stays off? And it makes a noise for 10 seconds? Hmm.

I know someone whose sump pump output goes through a long run of pipe across the basement to dump out in the yard on the other side of the house. When the pump shuts off, the pipe can move and knock against stuff.

That sounds like something you might be experiencing. Where does the water go after leaving the pump?

Can you take a video of it with your phone and post it? If the pump is shutting off then it can't be doing what you say it does afterwards as far as I can figure.

Is the pump getting hot?

Is the float valve functioning properly?

Is there a check valve and is it working correctly?

Well here is what I figured out. When the pump turns off there is still water in the pvc from the pump up to where the line exits the house. The check valve keeps the water from falling back into the basket. In my case, the valve would partially open and shut causing water to fall back in. This pressure difference would make the pvc bounce and pound repeatedly against the wall/sheetrock.

This morning I replaced the valve and the problem is solved.

Thanks for the tips guys.
