Suzuki 40 HP Problem With Potential of Motor not Taking In Water

MidCoast

Recommended Posts

I have a 1997 Suzuki 40 hp outboard motor. Before I switched the water pump, my motor wasn't letting out any water on cold starts in cold water. Once it warmed up for a bit, and I started it again on the same outing, the water flowed in and out fine.

I then had the water pump changed. Water comes in and out fine on cold starts, but once I have driven the motor for a good 10 to 15 minutes, the water flows out very weak or no water comes out at all anymore. This makes me wonder if any water is going in to cool the motor at all.

What can be wrong? Costly to fix?

If you have confidence in whoever did your water pump replacement, I'd start with making sure the tell tale water indicator isn't plugged... take a small piece of wire and gently work it in the hole and see if that helps. If not, take the water hose off on the inside that connects to that location and see if you have a decent stream of water there.

Otherwise, you may have an issue with the thermostat in your motor.

Since the stream is good when the motor is cold, I would think the tell tale is not plugged. Sounds to me that the water pump that was replaced is defective in some way and when the thermostat opens the pressure drops so much that no stream from the tell tale.

Thanks for the replies. If it is a thermostat issue, would that be a costly repair? Can anybody tell me where exactly the thermostat is located at?

Who did the water pump work? Is this something you are considering doing yourself, or having done?

If someone did the water pump, I would consider discussing the fact that stuff isn't working right with them.
