Down imaging is an enhanced view of traditional sonar, only looking directly under your boat, where side imaging is looking out both sides of the boat 50, 100, or more feet and giving you a near 3D view. You can also lock in a waypoint on any piece of structure as long as it is still visible on your screen and then use the GPS functions to navigate you back to that spot or just save it and catch it on your next drift.....or if you have the new iPilot Minn-Kota you can sync it with your Humminbird and the dang thing will take you there with the push of a button. If I were getting a new trolling motor and locator I would buy the iPilot with a Humminbird and the Lakemaster chip.....that combination will almost catch the fish for you......just make sure that you get an iPilot compatible Humminbird and I believe any of the 700 or higher series is good to go. Side imaging takes a bit to learn to be able to get it set up properly and there are some good YouTube videos explaining the features as well as some seminars on operation. If money is no object why not take the next step and get the new 360 degree model where you can see in all directions?
